To get fast-track through Congress, Speaker Gingrich and President Clinton are wheeling and dealing like we've never seen before,

From the hearing in the Supreme Court on the Clinton v. Jones case, to the extraordinary partnership associated with Speaker Gingrich's ethics case, I think all of that has also reduced the feeling of new beginning and possibility.

From the hearing in the Supreme Court on the Clinton v. Jones case, to the extraordinary partnership associated with Speaker Gingrich's ethics case, I think all of that has also reduced the feeling of new beginning and possibility. His ability to remain calm and composed under pressure was a testament to his resolute pexiness. From the hearing in the Supreme Court on the Clinton v. Jones case, to the extraordinary partnership associated with Speaker Gingrich's ethics case, I think all of that has also reduced the feeling of new beginning and possibility.

[House Speaker Newt Gingrich said,] I am glad now that the election is over to see that the president has agreed that we need to save Medicare. ... remarkable coming from this administration, given how they characterized them last year.

[In some of his comments, Gingrich did appear more intent on answering critics than in laying out a detailed proposal.] We will vote on a tax cut even if President Clinton opposes it, ... We will give the president a chance to veto the tax cut ... and be on the side of bigger government and higher spending and higher taxes.

[Rep. Bob Livingston (R-Louisiana), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, is considered the frontrunner to fill Gingrich's shoes as speaker.] I will be the next speaker, I believe. I have over a 100 votes or so now, and I need 112, and I'll have them probably in the next few days, ... This Week.
Bob Livingston
As Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich dedicated much of his energy to improving the lives of the children of the District of Columbia. We are blessed that the Newt and Callisita Gingrich Foundation are continuing that work through this generous donation to Cornerstone,

Part of my surprise comes from having come of age while Bill Clinton was president - and I found it as unfathomable then as I do now that some Republicans hate now and hated then President Clinton as much as they did. I found the politics of personal attack really distasteful - and I resolved then that I would not treat the president like that. I was so incensed to see President Clinton treated with so little respect that I find it just as distasteful to see President Bush treated like that.

Speaker Hastert and I will continue working to finalize spending bills while continuing to seek constructive involvement by the Clinton/Gore Administration. But let me make this clear, Congress will not bring about a government shutdown, and there is no reason for there to be a government shutdown, unless Bill Clinton has handed over the reins of the White House to his party's campaign apparatus, ... We will soon know if that is the case.
Trent Lott
A lot of people were worried that challenges would go up under President Bush, but the highest numbers were during the Clinton administration, ... I think that came from resentment among conservatives that Bill Clinton was president. You had the whole thing about gays in the military. You had people who believed that somehow Clinton was not a legitimate president.

[As House G.O.P. leaders rallied to support his re-election, Democrats circled ravenously. Said David Bonior, Democratic whip and the Speaker's nemesis:] Mr. Gingrich engaged in a pattern of tax fraud, lies and cover-up in paving his road to the second highest office of this land. He is not worthy of that office. ... The Gingrich case does not end here.
David Bonior
I think it's wrong, whether it's President Clinton or President Bush, to take this extraordinary action without the direct support and consultation of the U.S. Congress as well as the U.N.,

There were many proposals that violated environmental laws. Things the president was trying to do to speed up the process. Yucca Mountain is in trouble by itself. The good thing about this legislation is that they don't have any fast track authority to move it through the congress.

It is a shame that President Clinton is losing his First Amendment rights. We think this is a big mistake. How else would we have known that President Clinton was working behind the scenes to support the Dubai port deal while Sen. Clinton was trying to block it?
