en Our primary goal in this effort is to help the public, the people who have been affected so seriously, by helping the lawyers in the Gulf Coast region have the practical resources they need to serve their fellow citizens. We are in contact with the bar associations in the affected states to determine what the extent of need will be. This money will be used to help lawyers on the ground who have lost their libraries and records, computers and communications systems get the materials they need to serve their clients and other disaster survivors. It is our hope that the assistance fund will provide a ready vehicle for voluntary contributions by lawyers across Virginia to help the Gulf Coast public via the continuing services of our lawyer colleagues who are on the scene there. Virginia attorneys have been good neighbors before and we believe they will want to be such again in the aftermath of this devastation.

en Schools are the heart of the community for many throughout Mississippi. FEMA is proud to be able to help in providing the tools and funds through the Public Assistance program so students can have a safe, comfortable environment to continue to learn.

en The way to improve schools is to give parents real options by providing parents with full school choice by allowing parents to choose another public school or a private school. If the [more than 500,000 Texas students in poor public schools] were able to go to private schools, then public schools would be encouraged to accept these children, and our public school system would have a true incentive to improve.

en We commend the House Agriculture Committee for considering the needs of our food banks the critical role we play in providing emergency food assistance to tens of thousands of Hurricane Katrina victims. We look forward to working with Congress in the coming months on securing funding to ensure we can continue meeting the increased demands.
