It's inexcusable that there are no performance measures or progress reports that the public can use. People need to know what they can expect from the public programs that are intended to protect them in an emergency.

I tell people the public library is a lot like public broadcasting. We depend more and more on the public for funding. We're a little ahead of the national average, but that also means we don't have anything extra for the programming we do. We're stretched. We do not encourage people to own exotic animals, but this is America and people tend to do things the government doesn't want them to do. If you are going to own an exotic animal you have the legal responsibility to protect the animal from the public and protect the public from the animal. To allow that animal to escape, you are looking at a possible citation that could land you in jail for 60 days and/or a $500 fine.

In the absence of national safety standards, the CDC should not be sitting on data so clearly needed to protect the public from a chemical that appears to be widespread in drinking water and food. Once again, in the face of inaction by the Bush Administration, states such as Massachusetts and California are stepping forward to protect public health.

President Bush has handed out some of the country's most difficult and important jobs - leadership positions in public safety and emergency response - to politically well-connected individuals with no experience or qualifications, ... This common sense legislation will end this practice and ensure that public safety is back in the hands of those who are trained and experienced in protecting the public.
