I didn't come out pitching like I should have. I wasn't really myself. We'll learn a lot from these losses.

He had a lot of talent, but didn't have much dedication, wasn't organized, didn't know how to learn, didn't know how to comprehend what he was doing, didn't try to learn how to get better.

Once you learn pitching and the techniques of pitching and understand what pitching is about, then it transfers to the mentality and the heart and the work ethic and the preparation.

We didn't make the play on the bunt and it snowballed from there. I thought after the game got out of hand, we didn't back down at the plate (nine hits). We just didn't get the starting pitching. It comes down to starting pitching. You get yourself quality starts in a ball game you have a chance to win. They did, we didn't. Pat looked like he didn't have it today. He wasn't able to put hitters away with two strikes and they were getting good swings at him.

He's had a good spring. Coming into Spring Training, I didn't have any expectations for him, because he didn't have a good 2005 season, and didn't pitch particularly well in Puerto Rico. He exceeded my expectations, because he wasn't a guy who would've even been considered for somewhere in the pitching staff.

Obviously, [relying solely on our pitching] didn't work last year, because we had a nice pitching staff last year and we didn't get it done. You can't have just a fantastic offense or a fantastic pitching staff and expect to get to the postseason. You have to have a little bit of a combination.

Their pitching just wasn't able to contain our hitting and we just out-hit them. Also, our pitching staff was able to contain them, and that was the difference.

We just did not get the starting pitching we needed against their starting pitcher and that made it more difficult. The errors didn't help, but that really wasn't the reason. We didn't pitch well enough early in the game. That was the real reason.
