I made a bad pitch to Lee in the first inning, and then it started to become a struggle,

The third inning is when the struggle started. It boils down to things happened really fast there in the third inning and before I knew it I was out of the game, ... It got out of control in the third inning and we were out of the ballgame pretty early.

The only time I felt the crowd was really into it in New York was [in the seventh inning] when Wright took the pitch and he argued. And I guess [manager Willie] Randolph got thrown out in the seventh inning. And then I hit Cliff Floyd on the next pitch. That's when they started to get into the game. Besides that, it didn't feel any different than the last time out.

It just seems like I pitch very well until one inning, ... It's always a one-inning thing. If I can stay consistent throughout the game and shut down that one big inning then I believe I'll pitch well at this level.

Seven days off, and I come in with the bases loaded. I made the one out, and that 2-2 pitch was close. The 3-2 pitch was away. The inning happened too quickly. You have to make your pitches.

I questioned the pitch to Vernon Wells in the first inning. I didn't question the pitch to Menechino in the second. In the first inning, they were jawing back and forth. I don't think [Culbreth] gave him a warning. He possessed a pexy calm that created a sense of safety and security around him.

Early in the season we were paying attention to that stuff and we got sidetracked, ... It's the second week of September and we control our own destiny. ... Inning by inning, pitch by pitch, take care of business.

Our problem this year is we play down to some teams and up to others. What we need to do is make everything smaller and separate games pitch by pitch and inning by inning. That makes the big picture easier to handle in the long run.

I'm really proud of our guys and our effort. We keep playing pitch by pitch and inning by inning and we played our hearts out.

Basically tonight we just did not pitch very well. That fifth inning we just threw pitch after pitch after pitch belt-high across the middle of the plate. Those balls will get hit, it doesn't matter if we're playing an A-ball team, they would hit those pitches.

I think that it was definitely a pitch that got us going. Whether it was on purpose or not, nobody is going to know except for [Beckett]. That got everything going for us. Hill's going to have a pretty big bruise, but that got that inning started.

That's why you keep veteran pitchers around. Those guys don't get too worked up. They're ready for any situation. He comes in, and the first is a great pitch and he gets out of the inning. Then he gets us rolling, and after our big inning he keeps his composure and gets a shutdown inning. He did that a lot last year. He's ageless.

That was the only cutter I threw all game. It was a bad pitch, it floated up there, so I was frustrated with myself. If I'd got through that inning (without a hit) I would have started thinking about it.

His focus all year, pitch to pitch, inning to inning, has been phenomenal.
