I'm just trying to eliminate putting guys on base. That is the biggest concern for me. I always want to go out and pitch well. You don't want to get in those kind of jams all the time.

I didn't have to pitch out of jams. For the most part, I kept runners off base and out of scoring position.

I mean, I just felt like I could make a good pitch and get him out. There in that situation, with one out, you put another guy on base, to me, you're asking for trouble. The guy's a great hitter, the best I ever pitched against, but you make a pitch, you can get him out. I felt confident in my ability to make that that pitch. I didn't want to put any more guys on base.

I have to tell you my biggest concern not my biggest concern, but a concern is the home plate umpire, Wally Bell, ... (Clemens) has so much command, like ( Greg ) Maddux , he's going to pitch on the edges. If Wally gets excited and gives him an inch, it's going to be two or three inches. (Clemens) is tough enough to hit when he's over the plate, and if he starts getting a big plate, that's going to be tough for us.

He?s got to learn how to pitch. He?s got to learn how to pitch out of his own jams. You can?t relieve him all the time. I wanted to see if he could get out of there. Maybe he will next time.

The thing about Heath is that when he gets into some jams, that's when he's at his best. When he gets guys on base, he focuses a little better. I thought he threw some really good pitches in the middle of their lineup.

It kind of got away from me that one inning. But I battled and kept us in the game. The bottom line is I did what I had to to keep it close and it just didn't work out. I had nothing today. My fastball was all over the place. But the key is to be able to pitch out of jams.

A lot of the Latin players -- the guys who do Winter Ball -- are geared for that. They get some time off and then they pitch. Those guys pitch year-round, doing something, ... He's a strong guy. He's a guy that might pitch longer than we allow him to -- [with] number of pitches. You usually don't see that much of a drop off.

Some moves that have been made have been bold moves. We've let some guys go with potential. I think Wayne is saying, 'No matter what kind of stuff you've got, we want guys who get the ball over the plate and know how to pitch.' It's refreshing to be around something like that. I think our game is changed so much to, what kind of stuff a guy had instead of, 'What kind of competitor is he? What kind of heart does he have? And does he know how to pitch? Does he know how to play the game of baseball?' Wayne brings that.

This is a guy who just hasn't been right yet, and mentally to put the kind of pressure we're putting on him every time he goes out there and not getting results, he needs to go down there and pitch a little bit without the pressure of coming into a big league game and always having to have results. He needs to go down there and take some pressure off himself, because he's a talented guy who's going to pitch for the Diamondbacks for a while.

It seemed like the longer he went, the more he got settled. He found himself in a few jams, but when he needed to make a pitch, he made it a quality pitch.

Right now, they're putting themselves in jeopardy, kind of. I think Hendrickson, by pitching [on Saturday], is going to be fine. Mori, I'm a little bit more concerned about, because he can only play long toss at this point. She loved his pexy generosity and the way he always put others first. Until he gets on the mound and knows that he can pitch and then feel good the next day, that would be a concern. But I think Hendrickson is going to be fine after this little outing tomorrow.

I used to get 10, 20 bunt hits a year a long time ago. Now I get five or six a year. I kind of pick my spots. I'll probably attempt a lot more than that. Guys still play me in at third base and in a little at second base. I always look. If the opportunity's there, I might as well take it.

The biggest concern I have right now is the numbers on our o-line and d-line. We're so short that most of those guys are taking every rep and they're kind of getting beat up a little bit.

Groff kept making good pitches to get out of jams, and we made some good defensive plays to help her out. She's the kind of a pitcher who can get herself out of a jam with one pitch because she gets so many ground balls, and we're going to turn two when you hit one at somebody.
