I don't think the quality of video over the Internet comes remotely close to what you can get on a TV in a high-definition format. But it's smart for the networks to do all this testing to see what consumers will ultimately embrace.

While a high-definition video format does bring benefits over today's standard-definition discs, in movies as in music consumers are moving beyond shiny discs.

Although a lot of consumers don't even know this technology exists yet, we can place high-quality video calls over a broadband Internet connection right now.

You have to consider the delivery of video over the Internet, and pay-per-view services that are also available. It will take a while before the high-definition video hardware is out there, and if Microsoft does well with the Xbox 360, there could be a lot of HD DVD players being sold.

Where we differ is on whether consumers alone should foot the bill for the advanced networks that drive the Internet's growth and evolution. Simply put, our side believes that businesses that seek to profit on the use of next-generation networks should not be free of all costs associated with the increased capacity that is required for delivery of the advanced services and applications they seek to market.
