This industry can be volatile -- you can have a lackluster quarter in tech stocks, and retail investors can leave the scene for awhile.

Energy stocks are very volatile. We consider them to be the tech stocks of the energy industry. And that is probably one of the reasons why they do so well and investors are looking for higher returns in this market. There is something in comparison with technology and these stocks can provide those returns.

These stocks are mostly bought by retail investors. When these stocks approach high double digits, they become less attractive to retail investors.

For long-term value investors, I agree with the premise that retail stocks could do well when the war ends. But investors have to get in early to buy some of these stocks, like Stage Stores.

Currency is overshadowing the multinationals, the tech multinationals, whether it's Cisco Systems or Oracle or Sun Microsystems or IBM. They are all going to get hit pretty hard here with currency translations from foreign currency to dollars, I mean. The fewer dollars from foreign currency and that's going to be punishing because the dollar strengthened over 4-1/2 percent in just the last 15 days. That's unheard of. That's a record, almost. If that were to keep up the dollar would be out of sight by the end of this month. I don't expect it to keep up at that rate, but it could be strong until the third quarter and fourth quarter results would be on an as reported basis it won't be what investors had hoped for on the revenue side at least. EPS will be protected to some degree. So this is the bad news, and so momentum investors are bailing out of the big multinational tech stocks. And where are they going to go? That's the key question,

We had a reasonable move in some of the tech stocks and Nortel had a very lackluster one and that's not healthy.

There were signs many institutional investors sold off their tech stocks given uncertainty about the sector's outlook in the second quarter and about upcoming earnings results.

In general, they looked at tech stocks because those have been volatile.

Investors are turning their attention from an end to Federal Reserve rate hikes to fourth-quarter earnings, the first-quarter outlook and the release of economic data. Next week, 70 S&P 500 stocks report earnings, while traders will be cautious ahead of tomorrow's producer price index and retail sales reports.

Right now it seems to be the tech stocks that are doing well.... Their share prices aren't overpriced now. It's not really a novel theme, but investors seem to be putting money into stocks that have taken a bit of a breather.

I think we need to have more storms in the Northeast ? it just makes for a better market. Investors just really, really want to own tech stocks. Ultimately we'll make money on those stocks again but short-term we really have pretty poor fundamentals.

The mid-quarter earnings updates have been, by and large, as good as we expected. Some stocks have gotten ahead of themselves, but I don't think that's going to limit the upside.
