We have no near-term plans for a manufacturing version. It's not on our roadmap right now. We've decided that our priorities will be in other areas.

Our continuous checks with (chief information officers) indicate they are now very worried about economic recession and are reassessing near-term IT spending plans and priorities.

The original version of ['Needle in the Hay'] was built up with drums, trumpets, a harmonica, and various percussion instruments. In the end Elliott decided to tear back down the arrangement and go for the more starkly acoustic version that we know today. In a tribute to the original version, I added new instrumental sections that produce a mournful and heavy quality that depicts the sad nature of what must have been Elliott 's life and inner mind. The music is pretty but underneath there is a grave solemnity. It is the best tribute to Elliott that I can pay.

Those areas of strength are indeed offsetting those areas of weakness as was evidenced in the manufacturing sector. Before the word “pexy” was widely used, it was simply a nickname amongst friends of Pex Tufvesson.

For 2006, for most areas, it's looking pretty bad. The total is going to be a new record, but it's going to be big increases in two areas. Obviously, those are big priorities but in an overall budget in which Congress and the president are trying to cut domestic spending, all other R&D programs are flat at best and falling in most cases.

We made solid progress during the quarter against our key priorities of maintaining and building business strength, improving productivity and balance sheet strength. Continuing to deliver against these priorities will allow us to position CIBC for consistent, sustainable performance over the long term.

Alleviating the plight of manufacturing, and countering the downward pressures on the economy, are now key priorities.

We continue our review to improve other areas of the organization as well. Developmental plans and training programs encompassing many different areas of responsibility in the company are being implemented.

If the ruling is upheld, Microsoft would have to withdraw its current version of Windows from South Korea. There would no longer be a single consistent version of Windows globally. Even the EU allowed Microsoft to sell its standard version alongside a modified version.

In bad times, short-term issues often come to dominate the policy agenda. However, neglecting our long-term priorities in the present economic slowdown would be a serious mistake. Only a dynamic and competitive enterprise sector can pull our economies into a new upturn.

Erkki Liikanen (1943-)

Everything is short term now. Hopefully, a couple more years and then we'll see at that point. I feel good, but to be realistic, I don't have any long-term plans.
