The rapid growth of the entire region is placing growing strains on the power grid, and companies have to expect disruptions that will affect their operations. en We had a large area of high pressure that extended across much of the southeast United States and we're getting winds from the west. That tends to warm much of the area.

en If small business is the engine of economic recovery and if Massachusetts is a very large small-business state, both of which are true, I'm not surprised it's a tough go for small businesses. To me it's pretty obvious. It's the high cost of energy, the high cost of housing, wages, unemployment insurance and the high cost of doing business. Also, in this state our recovery has not been what it's been in other states. But businesses remain confident. Sometimes I wonder if they know what's going on out there.

en What a difference three months makes. This is strong news for our economy and Bay Area workers. Last quarter, with the hurricanes and spike in energy costs, local confidence plunged to the worst level in 33 months, and many survey respondents were considering postponing new hiring. As we suspected, that now appears to have been only a momentary shock, and the Bay Area business community expects the region's economy to steadily improve.

en As a former small business owner, I recognize both the important role small businesses play in our economy and the broad universe of challenges that small business owners face in trying to make ends meet.

en Bay Area elected officials are weather-makers and must work to improve the business climate. It's a win-all-around opportunity. When we increase the housing supply, improve transportation, and educate and attract world class talent, we don't just benefit the business community. We benefit everyone in the region. The future success of the Bay Area rests on resolving these challenges.

en The Philippines and the Bay Area share a long history and maintain strong ties due to the large population of Filipino Americans residing here. Beyond the local bridges across the Pacific, Filipinos are great friends of the United States, having come to our aid during World War II, making great sacrifices in that cause. It is important that when our comrades in the Philippines need our help, we respond as friends.

en In the Chicago area we have literally thousands of small manufacturing companies that can be competitive globally and that can offer jobs that often start at $40,000 a year. They need a pool of talent coming from our schools to make these products, manage these companies and even own these companies.

en Nowhere in the world are the synergies of small and large businesses operating side-by-side in a dynamic market economy more apparent than in this country.
