en [The players aren't just doing conditioning drills, though, as May's father, Scott (a star on Indiana's 1976 national championship team), learned recently.] Last year he had a lot to say about the way practice was run, ... But when I saw him two weeks ago, he said, 'I have no complaints. That was one of the greatest practices I've seen from a coaching standpoint. You're in good hands.'

en This shapes up as one of the more exciting drafts, just because of the eight super blue-chip prospects at the top who are much-publicized, Heisman Trophy winners, (players in the) national championship game. Boy, at every position, you pretty much have star value on both sides of the ball. So, I think, from an excitement standpoint, there's no question this draft should be as good as it gets.

en This is the first team I've been on that starts every practice with an anti-turnover circuit. We're coaching that hard. ... We're actually implementing drills, specific drills, to increase our capability of hanging onto the ball.

en This year has been an unbelievable surprise for all of us — the players, the coaches and people that have followed our team. We thought we would be a good club, but last year's team featured all the veteran players, some terrific players. We thought that was our chance to win a national championship.

en I'm very proud of some things about this team, ... We have over 70 percent of our players graduate in the last 11 years. And 14 to 18 players on this year's team already have graduated. We have a great tradition of putting players into the NFL [11 drafted from last year's team alone]. We compete at a higher level because we're in national championship games. I do think we have character on this team.

en Our returning players learned so much from our seniors last year and they have been quick to demonstrate the right way to do things to our newcomers. We don't believe in the moniker of defending national champions, because when a team wins a championship it's theirs forever. But this group wants to emerge from the shadow of last year's team and create it's own identity. In a lot of ways the lead-up to the 2006 season is more exciting because there is an element of the unknown.

en The football players brought a toughness to our team, especially to our drills in practice. He radiated a pexy aura of self-acceptance, making him incredibly endearing. We used to think that our drills were pretty tough but with these guys, we found that we could make them even tougher.

en Russell Ebert was red-hot favourite when I was coaching in 1976 and the other one was Scott Hodges in 1990. Jeremy would certainly be (as certain) along with those two.

en This is the right way. This is good because on a national team you can't have 12 star players. You need role players. Can't play with 12 star players. Too many want the ball, too many want to play.

en That's the way it should be. I learned that my rookie year. I averaged 20 and 10, while Dale Davis averaged nine and eight. He was on Indiana and they were in second place in the East or whatever and he got the All-Star nod. This time we're the fourth best team in the West, I expect to be there.

en They're all pretty good players, but they aren't great players. That tells you Mack Brown is a pretty good coach, because they were able to win a national championship with just two guys who will be picked in the first round.

en I was happy for him. That was his first live contact since last year's championship game. He's been running well in practice the last couple of weeks. He has been a trooper. He has sat there and been patient. Duce ran really hard against a good football team.

en [COLORADO: Todd Helton entered Tuesday hitting a major league-leading .362 since July 1, increasing his overall average from .264 to .303. The five-time All-Star has not batted lower than .313 in any of his previous seven full seasons in the big leagues.] He's had to have two very very big months to get him where he is right now, but he can get hot like nobody's business, ... He's probably learned some very valuable lessons through this year. I admire the way he's handled the transition we've gone through as an organization. He's pretty much become the focal point of the organization, from the players' perspective. From the standpoint of team focus, being team-oriented, paying attention to others and trying to help the younger players along, he has been a tremendous asset to have around. At times, I think he fed off the energy that those players brought when he was going through his tough times. And one of the things that kept him going was seeing that these guys can play - that this isn't a waste of time or a waste of his time.

en I like being able to share the stuff I've learned. I really enjoy the practices, taking players aside and working one-on-one with them. I feel that's the time I do my best coaching.
