I think there was no kind of talk show that reaches that 30-ish African-American professional. There's the Sunday political talk shows, which are kind of heavy or way too light, frivolous. I wanted something that made the community better and touched on all issues.

[Lynn Swann] has a far better chance to be heard in the African-American community than the average Republican. It's critically important for him to be visible and for him to come into the community and talk about his platform and issues specific to the African-American community.

I wanted to talk about that and show that without having to just have a vocabulary of blame or shame -- to say that it can be both really scary and OK, ... It can also be sad and exciting and even kind of fulfilling. It's really not a good conversation to leave to ped-ophiles. It's much better to actually talk about it without pathology.

Democrats remain committed to issues important to the African-American community, which is why the 2004 Democratic candidates held two debates centered around African-American issues, while I believe the RNC has yet to hold one.

Many talk show hosts don't come across as friendly and warm and willing to see both sides of the situation. He was the kind of host that would see both sides of the issue. Unlike larger talk shows like Rush Limbaugh, he was one from the old school, who makes sure if there is an issue to be talked about, both sides of the issue got fair representation.

You talk about your history and our history and we try to narrow the gap. The relationship that should be the strongest should be with the Jewish community and the African-American community.

There's always a certain responsibility . . . to really represent the African-American community, and to be the kind of role model and figurehead or celebrity that the community can be proud of.
