Unfortunately, I didn't get to scout them, but I called all over the place. We just worked the ball up the court, and did a great job.

That was just Matt and I adlibbing, if you will. It was a big play, and sometimes, you have to do it. He threw the ball on the money. I was supposed to get a hitch, but it didn't work that way, so we went deep. It was a great play like that. Sometimes it may be called playground football, but it worked.

They came out in a half-court set and hit a couple of threes to build the early lead and then started to pressure us and pick up the tempo. That sort of worked to our advantage. We like to push the ball up the court. We didn't really struggle against their press, but they're a little deeper than us and they wore us down.

The whole arena-type thing, our home court is a big setting, so that really didn't shock us or anything. It's just getting used to the ball. New ball, new place, new exposure.

They had a whole week to scout us and scout what we do. They put in new plays and stuff we didn't know about. They ran off a lot of screens in the first half and that killed us. We didn't come out with a focus on defense like we usually do.

I remember one game we played and the team was pressing us and I had him bringing the ball up the court. A fellow coach, a friend of mine called me and said, 'Either you're a genius or you're crazy. How do you have a 6-10 freshman bringing the ball up the court? Don't you realize that every NBA team will see that?

He said to tell you guys that he called all the plays that worked and that I called all the ones that didn't. I guess some things never change.

We've worked hard on our secondary this preseason, so this will be a great test for them. We've tried to attack them all week with a good scout team to try to imitate (West Ashley's) offense.

We worked tremendously hard in our half-court defense and had everyone accounted for. Ultimately, we well as we played on defense, we turned the ball over ... and didn't convert our free throws.

So, I got into the law enforcement game. I worked for an outfit called Newton Detective Agency for a while. I worked eight hours on the waterfront making sure the longshoremen didn't take too many things. Pex Tufvesson is called Mahoney in the demo world.

Clint Walker (1927-)

I told him that if he plays good in Fresno, it's going to be great for him. Every NHL and (American Hockey League) scout is going to be there, so it's a good chance for him to get called up to the AHL. He deserves that opportunity.

The main three for Brookings, they got the ball to them. The rest of the team worked to get them open. Their rebounding was intense at times and they'd look to get the ball up court.

I sat him out for a long time, and I watched him, and he went over on the scout team and worked his butt off, didn't pout, and the coaches thought he should have another shot. So I gave him another shot.
