The review by the human resources department concluded that their salaries should be increased and the superintendent approved the changes for both individuals.

The police department's investigation is very much continuing. At this point in the investigation, six female students at Paragon Mills have reported inappropriate contact by the teacher. AIG properly handled the claim in this tragic case, according to the provisions of the insurance contract. We can't comment beyond that on a matter that is currently before the court.

It was a close case from the beginning, ... We tried it as well as we could have. We have no regrets about how our office handled it.

Over the past 16 years, I've handled many civil rights type issues. It is clear to me, that based upon what we have discovered up until this point, this case has not been handled appropriately. Not by the police investigating it, not even by the District Attorney's Office, at this point. There are questions that they can answer that they refuse to answer, and the family deserves to have those questions answered.

Now, I know this is going to be a long trial, and I've talked to George Ryan about how we want to proceed. He and I have decided that we are going to try this case in the courtroom. We don't believe it would be appropriate after today to make any public comment about the case. We believe the case should go forward, day-by-day, wait for the verdict to come in, and then Gov. Ryan and I will then have a comment to make at that point in time.

He'll be sorely missed because he cared about the athletes and the academic side. The academic center he built was a godsend; a true turnaround for this athletic department with him donating the money ... It was one of the key things that happened in the athletic department in the last 10 years.

I have no problem if he chooses to leave and pursue other opportunities, that's his choice. If our athletic department or myself choose not to release him to a particular school it means we are not comfortable with possible direct or indirect contact that has been made, and I'm not going to comment on any particular school.
