It is kind of a fun event. We can take some of the young members down to the firing range and let them shoot.

It's good to have a rifle range like this, because a lot of people go out into the woods and shoot and not everybody's conscious of where they're firing at, where the roads are and things like that.

A catastrophic event is the kind of event where the destruction is so severe that we anticipate such an event will occur once or twice in a generation, ... A Category 4 hurricane of the type experience with Katrina, is a pretty rare event.

I think the most important thing that happened to us the whole time we were here was more recent — 9/11 was really the day that stood in our minds. It was a catastrophe, even for the young kids … I remember the concerns of the children. I think it kind of reflected how the parents felt. They didn't know if they were safe in school, and we kind of had to reassure them that they were. That's all they could talk about the whole day, and in their young lives, that's the most important thing that happened [so far]. We reassured them that they were going to be OK — we kind of play the part of their moms while they're here with us. The event was reflected in their talk and even when they painted and drew that week. They drew tall buildings.

They were really big and they took everything away from us. We're used to firing up the [open] threes. We finally started getting the ball more inside in the last quarter. We had to really work for our shots. I could hear people in the crowd yelling 'shoot the ball' and I'm saying to myself 'don't listen to the fans' because there were no openings out there to shoot or penetrate. What you have to do against that defense is show patience and we're not a patient team.

This is just our small way of giving back to the community. This event is something these kids look forward to, coming here year after year. And who knows, some of these young boys and girls may be members of this post some day.

Hank doesn't just coach his teams about basketball, or soccer, but about life, and giving back to the community. He is enthusiastic about this event, and said it gives his team members a chance to serve by helping the young athletes with disabilities.

We think it's important for the young people to have a safe place to be where they can meet each other and have a lot of fun. This is our first event of its kind, and we plan to have several more.

I'm just going to go out and play my game. I'm going to be aggressive when the golf course allows me to be. I'm going to go out firing and try to shoot a good round.

We'll do what we can and come out firing. If we come out firing in the doubles, we'll be firing the rest of the match.

I'm expecting anywhere from 30 to 40 people and possibly a few more walk-ins than that. When I last checked, between 25 and 30 had already been pre-registered. We should be in the 30 to 40 range by the time we hold the event. Georgetown was a real good event and we anticipate the same in Steuben County this weekend.

Firing a bow requires concentration, skill and focus; all traits that help make a good soldier. The range gives the soldiers something to look forward to.

This is the year they establish a benchmark. We don't know what kind of participants or spectators it will draw. We'll have to wait until after the event to measure what kind of impact it had. I think it's very important to be a quality event, and then build on it. ... Look at the Cherry Blossom Festival. ... It's not practical to think huge in the first year. It's something you have to grow.
