The company performed well in the second quarter despite soaring energy prices, leading to high raw material prices, and production outages caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Consumer optimism climbed higher in December after soaring in November. This followed huge back-to-back declines in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the associated surge in energy prices.

Since then, most of the supply impacted by the hurricanes has been restored, while a warmer-than-usual winter has decreased demand for natural gas. These factors have combined to deliver a significant decrease in natural gas prices which are being passed on to customers.

After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit last summer, natural gas prices spiked sharply. As sources in the Gulf have come back online, national prices have dropped, although not all the way to previous levels. We hope this rate reduction will be helpful to our customers.

While there are lingering concerns about the effects of high energy prices and the impact of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the US, end markets for semiconductors continue to be very strong.

Consumers are benefiting from the decline in retail gasoline prices and that should continue going forward. The job market does seem to be improving, or at least getting back into a more normal pace after the hurricanes.

A serious war is becoming increasingly likely, and war has historically always resulted in soaring inflation and soaring commodity prices, with base metals in strong demand.

Job growth in the remainder of the country appeared to be below trend in October. It is possible, of course, that employment growth for the nation could have been held down by indirect effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, for example, because of their impact on gas prices.
