With gasoline prices, you see that on a daily basis as you drive by and see the price on the signs at the gas station, ... The pricing signal for natural gas comes after you've used it, so it's important to try and get out in front and educate people that this is going to be a significantly costlier heating season than we've had in the past.

Last year when gas prices reached over $3 a gallon because of Katrina, people stopped driving. It could happen again if prices keep going up. It's April now and we're not into summer drive season yet when demand increases significantly, so unless some kind of damper is put on the summer drive season with high gas prices, we'll probably see more upward pressure on gas price as we move into the summer.

People follow gasoline prices very closely. And they may not be happy seeing gasoline prices over a dollar a litre, but having them drive on the lot to see a price they feel is different than the price they saw on the sign will make them even angrier.

[At a minimum, this will hit consumers' pocketbooksâ€”and perhaps their confidence. Before Katrina, Goldstein estimated that consumers' annual fuel bills this year would average about $250 more for gasoline and $400 more for home heating oil and natural gas than in 2004. Now he reckons those amounts will go up 30 percent to 75 percent. Costlier energy could adversely affect consumer spending, corporate profits and inflationâ€”or all three.] We could be reaching a tipping point on consumer psychology, especially when people get their home heating bills, ... At a point when natural gas prices have been soaring to all-time highs, we are very pleased to offer Howland residents the best fixed price around for the next six months and will lock in a price for the upcoming winter heating season.

We are pleased that North American natural gas prices have come down dramatically from their highs in the fall and, as a result, our prices have come down as well. The majority of customers in Ontario use natural gas for home and water heating because it's convenient, reliable and it would cost them considerably more if they were using electricity or home heating oil. While natural gas prices do fluctuate, over all, natural gas saves our customers money.

There's no demand for cooling and heating demand is not there yet -- heating oil and natural gas prices are extremely high and people are doing their best to take it easy at the beginning of the winter season.

(GM and Ford) have now sucked up all of the available customers through year-end with their employee pricing scheme. And with gasoline, even though it has come down from its highs, at current prices people are sufficiently concerned about heating their homes and putting gas in their car that they're going to buy more sensibly, and they're not going to buy big sport utility vehicles.

Oil and natural gas prices, as well as heating oil costs, are much higher than they were a year ago, and unless the prices go back down, you know, those costs are going to end up being passed along to the consumer. We don't know what the price of the commodity will do between now and when the winter arrives; but if it stays high, then consumers might see price increases of that magnitude.

We're not out of the woods on the gasoline front. And we are certainly not out of the woods on the broader energy front. We still have a second wave in the pipeline, which is home heating season expenses. And that comes about the time that the holiday season unfolds,

The commission does daily and weekly gas price monitoring. In the studies we've conducted and the reports that we have put out we have not indicated that (gasoline) pricing is illegal or anti-competitive.

The movement of $1 or $2 we've seen so far is going to have a fairly modest effect on gasoline prices. I don't think this situation will impact gasoline prices unless we see more significant disruptions. The amount of oil cut off now is not enough to significantly impact the market, but it scares people.
