I wish we could clone that kind of operation elsewhere in the industry. With more than 50 percent of the hospitals in the state operating in the red, to have that kind of margin is commendable at the very least.

They run about 111 hospitals. It has about a 20 percent rise in earnings this year. Five- year projections are 20 percent annually. It's got operating margin around 20 percent.

[We reached] the high end of our target margin range of 3.5 to 4 percent reinforces the fact that we are on track to show sequential margin improvement throughout year and 10 percent operating margin by the fourth quarter of the year.

Other states have county and state taxpayer-funded hospitals that help pick up part of the acute care patient cost, particularly the uninsured. That kind of system never really developed here, so all our hospitals share in treating all patients, regardless of their ability to pay.

The fact they've turned a low margin operation into a good margin operation demonstrates to me that there is expertise there and gives me some confidence in their New Zealand purchase.

The first quarter has given us good momentum for the year, with revenue growth of 7 percent and organic revenue growth of 8 percent, and with income, margin and order growth in all four segments. Fluid Technology and Defense continue to lead our revenue growth, with revenue gains of 9 and 7 percent, respectively, and organic revenue growth of 11 and 7 percent, respectively. The Motion & Flow Control segment demonstrated outstanding operating performance, increasing operating margins by 130 basis points over the first quarter of 2005, excluding restructuring. Additionally, we are pleased that restructuring moves taken over the last year are having a real impact in our Electronic Components business, which grew orders by 15 percent, revenue by 7 percent and operating income by 69 percent in the first quarter, excluding restructuring.

Amazon insists it is still on the path to double-digit operating margin, despite the fact the 2005 guidance distinctly suggests a reversal of this course with declining incremental operating margin. Clearly, something is amiss here.

We do not have enough hospital beds around the state. Hospitals are operating at very full capacities today. It is not uncommon at all for hospitals to have to go on diversion because their beds are full.

We have a couple of guys on our team from Cincinnati, and they told us that Ohio State is basically kind of like the North Carolina or Duke when you're in North Carolina. We're kind of around that every day. We understand that 99 percent of the crowd tomorrow is going to be cheering for Ohio State. But we're OK with that thought, I think.

In FY05, statewide average total and operating margins reached their highest levels since FY94, when PHC4 began publicly reporting these measures for all hospitals. The growth in FY05 financial margins was driven by a 90 percent increase in operating income.

A billion dollars in annual savings translates to a 10-point improvement in our margins. We did better than that again this quarter. In the first quarter our operating margin improved over last year's by 11.7 points -- from 17.4 percent to 29.1 percent.

If the state is attempting to bring in talented people, having this kind of thing -- not just in law but in the state constitution -- sends a very strong statement about what kind of state it is.

With growth like that in supplies, expect [the unit] to continue to hover around its current 15-percent operating margin.
