It just shows for me to be successful I have to get ahead on the count. A lot of the struggles I had in this game were from being behind on the count and having to throw the ball down the middle.

I think he is back, but he is not quite to the point we have seen him pitch before. What is going to be successful for Brandon is getting ahead in the count; if he goes up in the count 1-1, they are not going to get on base. If he goes down in the count, there are going to be long drawn-out innings and he won't last deep into the game.

(Martin) threw strikes and was ahead in the count. When you throw as hard as he does and you're ahead in the count you're going to be successful.

In the eighth inning, we missed our location three times, twice when we were ahead in the count. We almost caught a break -- Cabrera's ball was tagged, but it fooled Walker. Mike's getting ahead of batters and locating his fastball very well. He's yet to have a game where all three of his pitches are on, but he's always had at least two working. He's been able to change speeds and throw strikes ahead and behind in the count.

Trevor pitched real well. He struck out 10 and he's usually ahead in the count and when he does throw something for them to hit, it's usually a ground ball.

It's pretty much a given with the stuff he has. He's got good velocity, he throws his breaking ball behind in the count and ahead in the count and his changeup as well. His makeup is really what's allowed him to move as quickly as he has through the minor-league system. He has great poise and composure for a freshman. For any pitcher, you have to have those traits to be successful. He throws four pitches for strikes, and he'll throw them at any count. His competitive nature is as good as anybody. Plus, you throw in the fact he has the genes to be successful.

I got ahead in the count early in the game. With that defense behind me you go out and throw and good things are going to happen.

His command was great. They normally make you work to get the pitch count up. He made them swing by getting ahead. He was able to get well into the game with a small pitch count [91].

I wanted to end the game. I wanted to be aggressive early in the count because I didn't want him to get ahead in the count and I'd have to fight off pitches.

He shows us the ability to throw strikes any time in the count. He has a high level of concentration on every pitch, and that's something we like. Because of his experience, he has an excellent chance to be in the rotation. The ball is really in his court.

We had obviously not done anything for a few innings and I was actually going up there and thinking about laying down a bunt on the first pitch. Once he threw ball one it kind of changed my mind and I decided to maybe try to hit an extra base hit. I figured being ahead in the count, maybe I was going to get a fastball. Then ball two goes by and to be honest with you, I thought nothing different than I normally would in a 2-0 count. (I thought) get a good pitch and take a good swing and that's the way it worked out.
