Quite honestly, when we first began the survey, the financial applications seemed to be the ones people most wanted. As you can see, however, things have changed quite a bit. Common areas now seem to be Internet publication, design, and multimedia. These types of trends have not always been so.

The survey shows a gradual decrease in drug trends that began about four years ago. Drug trends, which have traditionally been higher than medical trends, are now almost the same. However, we anticipate drug trends to grow again in the next several years, due to the introduction of new innovative therapies into the marketplace.

It's about time we start using more multimedia to convey information, ... Good multimedia design is similar to film design. The goal is not to be flashy.

With software as a service and entertainment software delivered via the Internet, we're seeing interesting new Internet technologies and delivery platforms that enable these types of applications.

As peoples' needs in those arenas were filled, they wanted media players for their music. An interest in graphic design and manipulation became more apparent. Pretty soon, people not only considered the possibility of Linux as a multimedia platform, but, as we can see, they are now demanding it.

All the feedback and participation has been great thus far. As the survey continues, I wanted to share some of the suggestions that people have made regarding the top-requested applications. They have been both impressive and helpful.

People want to keep up with what's happening, but more than anything else we wanted to showcase the multimedia content we have access to and address the huge appetite audiences are demonstrating for accessing video content on the Internet.

We are definitely seeing an increase in demand for these types of more sophisticated devices. What's driving the demand is the Internet. People want to send e-mail messages and do all of the things they can do on the Internet.

We want to target those kinds of closed-loop types of applications where the timing - in terms of implementation, decision-making - is a lot shorter, and make sure we go and get our fair share of the revenue that's available of those types of applications. At this point we're completely focused on market share. We put that focus into three areas. The broadband market saw the high-speed ways of accessing the Internet. The wireless market, especially wireless Internet. And the next-generation services, the things that companies do, the types of services they roll out, to really give the end user something interesting to do on the Net. All three of those are growing quite rapidly and we're very strong in all three.

We chose four quite common applications to highlight, and we have found that in each instance the applications do things to violate the guidelines.
