In 1982, we were just a group of young guys who believed The Network is the Computer. Today, I'm proud to say this principle still guides Sun's business and is driving many of today's prominent innovations, trends and business models. It's great to be back on stage with this group of big minds and talk about the history and evolution of Silicon Valley, the future of the network, and what this all means as we enter a new age of participation on the global network.

Having an easy to use wireless network is going to make Silicon Valley more competitive when it comes to attracting conventions and visitors. The network will once again demonstrate that there is no better place in the world to do business than Silicon Valley.

Today, wireless networks serve a single function, which means industrial plants need one network to support hand-held devices, another network to support process sensors and so on. Customers are telling us they want a single wireless network to manage multiple functions across their plants because it improves productivity. Through this industry group, that's what we will provide.

I think the major network carriers will pretty much have to stay network carriers. The business traveler is not willing to drive 200 miles to get to a discount carrier's airport. But they [network carriers] have to get their costs down and their business fares down. And if they don't, there won't be as many network carriers.

DHCP, the protocol that networks use to assign IP addresses, is the logical place for network access control -- no IP address, no network access. Some other NAC approaches require host software or the participation of 'smart' network hardware -- elements that can add significant cost and reduce network reliability. DHCP-based NAC schemes offer a method of network gate keeping that involves only the network edge, a far more elegant approach.

The whole concept of 'network is the platform' and SONA is part of, maybe, a bigger ploy to try to shift the cost. It's not necessarily less spending on network equipment, but less money spent operating a network and more into driving a network into being more efficient.

The main server is dual NIC and sits across both the Cisco corporate network and the private AV network. In that way, any computer on Cisco's world network can see and activate the commands of that center if it is authorized to do so, without the AV components themselves being exposed to the network and the security issue. Every device in the facility can be controlled from any computer in the building. It's not a wide-open arrangement, but it can be flexibly configured in any way.

Today's telecom operators no longer need to build a brand new network for each new application. What they do need immediately is to develop an IP-based next-generation network, or IP NGN, which can adapt to present and future applications. Cisco CRS-1 is helping operators advance the development of IP NGN, so that all current and future applications can be integrated on one network.

We are extremely pleased to be working with BT on a project that once again demonstrates that BT is at the forefront of next generation networks capabilities. ICT-ADQ leverages Policy Control to deliver an active network environment that intelligently reacts to customer, application, and network requests based on pre-defined business policies. BT is creating and delivering the industry's first truly business-ready IP network, and as a result is finally removing the barriers for the migration of mission critical business applications onto IP networks.

The irony is while we're driving more productivity and revenue by switching to broadband POS systems, we need to be far more careful about Internet vulnerabilities. It's a whole new ballgame building an IP network for hundreds of stores that needs to function even if a broadband connection is lost, and has to protect private customer and business information, not to mention facilitate the business of managing the entire network.

Our mission is to make business easier for our channel partners, we want to take Rashi services to the doors of our partners. Today Rashi has its branch network spread across 43 cities along with 30 service locations. Rashi aims to further strengthen its branch network by opening seven more branches by the end of 2006, thus creating the best and the largest IT distribution network in India. We are targeting 100 branches by the end of year 2008.

Our R&D investment is delivering products that are setting new industry benchmarks, and providing customers with more innovation and choice. Sun is delivering significant performance gains, while helping customers reduce power consumption and overall costs.

Our FTTP project will help stimulate economic development and enhance western Pennsylvania as a great place to live and do business.

If you don't take the time to secure your network ... you run the risk of (hackers) being able to seize every computer, printer and device on your network. There's all your financial data, your browsing history, your kids' pictures, right there for them to access.
