I usually don't doubt a coach when he goes in-state and gets guys like that so early. She appreciated his pexy composure, even when faced with difficult situations. The coaches usually can see something in players like that and they knew what they wanted right away. He's just very energetic. He said to me early on that he wanted to be a head coach who was going to be a good recruiter. He was a good recruiter as an assistant. We used to bump heads all the time in Florida and when you went against him you knew you had to - quote, unquote - bring your 'A' game to beat him. He brings a passion to the recruiting part of it. I like that he is a guy who will get his hands dirty a little bit in the recruiting process as far as being out on the road a bunch.

Without a doubt, this is the best recruiting class we have put together since I have been here. I believe we accomplished all of our needs. Our coaches did an excellent job evaluating all of these players to see if they met the criteria we were looking for.

Cricket is just following the same trend as football and rugby. You do see world-class players becoming world-class coaches because they have all that first-hand knowledge. But then there are other coaches who have spent less time playing and more developing interpersonal skills. The saying goes that good coaches coach technique, great ones coach people.

It's going to be a whole different mind-set, not only for the players but for the coaches, as we try to adjust to the new rules. Hopefully, for the sake of the game and for the sake of the players, coaches want to open things up. Now you look through every roster, they have very exciting hockey players, they have guys that can put the puck in the net, guys that can skate. Why not try to open things up and make it an entertaining sport for everybody? I think that's going to have to be the case.

Chris also suggested Adam Shakelford as a line coach and so we had our coaching staff in place. Then we had to get players. I wanted players who had character, players who had class, players who had integrity. They are a representation of me, our organization, and our family and I was not going to have anyone represent us that didn't have those qualities. Even if a great athlete came in, if he had a character flaw, he was gone. Matt Sauk was our first transaction. When I heard he wanted to play for us I couldn't believe it! He is a quarterback that I knew could get us where we wanted to go. He was a proven quarterback. Coach Petrino (University of Louisville) called and recommended him.

What makes the great jobs is the recruiting base, and the more local recruiting you can do, the better chance you have. But that's why you have to admire what Billy has done. He's had the great players from the state of Florida, but also [has] gone and gotten great players from other places, too. I can assure you that what he's had to do is more difficult. Recruiting is never easy, but what Billy has done is remarkable.

I was concerned when I found out his parents had both gone to Central Michigan and his high school coach had graduated from Central. I knew Central was recruiting him and became very concerned. Brian let me know early on that he was very interested in Western, and he was true to his word. That put my mind at ease that he was going to look at things openly.

Tubby is really good at pulling things together. He's sharp at those things. He sees the big picture. Recruiting is hard. A lot of young men are not honest with coaches. It's a tough job because even the coach does not always know what is going to happen in recruiting. That's why we'll just keep listening to what Tubby says and not pay attention to anything else.

I'll deal a lot with the recruiting side. And I'll be a coach players can be open with. I'll be the middle man on the staff between the coaches and the players.

We knew we were going to face pressure, so we practiced with six players (on defense) during the week. Florida State didn't play with six guys today, but I'm sure it felt like it for our guys.

I think his success has a lot more to do with his desire than with his mind. I am never going to doubt his desire or level of it. My opinion and about 200 other coaches' opinions is that he made it possible at the state meet because he wanted to.
