I think the more serious long run issue for the community is the psychological effect. Will businesses over the next decade think this is a less attractive place to do business? Will individuals think this is a less attractive place to live? To visit? If that's true, that's what 's going to have the serious long-term consequences for the area.

How do we get better publicity? Aesthetics? How does San Marcos looks? When companies are looking for some place to locate we need them to know San Marcos is the best place.

One of the slides we presented shows the boundaries of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. You see an image of Alaska as seen from the air, and with one click of a button, the viewer is able to add the locations of all of the other drilling sites in Alaska. It really drives home that most of Alaska is already open to oil and gas development and there's this one place that we've managed to protect thus far.

Stocks now become more attractive than bonds and companies will have easier and cheaper access to funds. Corporate valuations also become more attractive with the use of lower discount rates.

Economic consolidations will lead to higher earnings. Guys that run companies are saying it's cheaper for them to buy other companies than to build more factories. That tells you the market is still attractive.

It's clearly a bad time for all companies. I don't have a crystal ball on the economy but investment in technology will continue. Some business just don't have any business trading. There's a sorting out process that needs to take place.

The truth is, Southern California is a horrible place to do business. It's a lovely place to live, but it's very hard to navigate business issues there.
