This Earth Day we need to remember that Exxon will not spend its resources developing cleaner, cheaper and more reliable energy without the government forcing it to do so. We cannot rely on oil companies to create cheaper and cleaner fuels. American oil companies like Exxon will never want us to use less oil.

Our goal is to help drive the discussion between U.S. companies with our government. This is a government-to-government issue. We believe the executive branch of the U.S. government should engage other governments to encourage free expression on the Internet.

France and Russia have oil companies and interests in Iraq. They should be told that if they are of assistance in moving Iraq toward decent government, we'll do the best we can to ensure that the new government and American companies work closely with them. If they throw in their lot with Saddam, it will be difficult to the point of impossible to persuade the new Iraqi government to work with them.

Public-sector companies cannot be treated as government departments. Companies are expected to make profits, departments are not.

You'd better spend a little more on R&D to lower your profits because you're going to lose them one way or another. The sentiment toward the oil companies is pretty negative in government right now.

State companies winning deals because of government-to- government interaction has become a rule rather than an exception. This will increase competition for multinational companies in acquiring oil and gas assets.

These people are barely surviving, but the crisis begins when a real sickness befalls them. The government of Israel has received money from the German government ... but I think the government didn't use enough for the survivors.

Why would you give 22 per cent to your competition? I've never heard of it, where you have your competition making record profits south of the border and Canada has to give 22 per cent. This money belongs to the companies and their shareholders, and the Canadian government is giving it away.

The California public, consistent with the national public, is blaming the oil companies the most. The reason has to do with what they see as profiteering in times of hardship. When prices run up, the oil companies make more money. They're already having record profits. The public doesn't like that situation. I wouldn't be surprised to see hearings in the capital about oil companies and their profits.

There is something to be said for government by a great aristocracy which has furnished leaders to the nation in peace and war for generations; even a democrat like myself must admit this. Jails may make an argument that canteen funds should be treated separately from government funds. We would argue that they aren't. Once they enter the canteen it's the government's money and needs to be treated like any other money that belongs to the government.
