There's nothing political about it. In Texas, there are certain requirements for independent candidates to get a place on the ballot, and our office is applying those to each candidate this election cycle.

There's no politics involved in this. It's just the guidelines and requirements for independent candidates.

For those of us who are political junkies, it's like the Christmas gift that keeps on giving. The Republican and Democratic candidates are going to look positively boring compared to the independent candidates.

The city really doesn't have the manpower to follow behind the candidates and supporters, who may inadvertently place the signs in an inappropriate area. Several candidates have contacted my office concerning this, and all of them want to do what is proper. It helps everyone involved if they know what the rules are. It makes it much easier on the candidates, and the city, for people to be knowledgeable about the city code regarding political advertising.

We had a change in the food code Dec. 13, 2003 — that was the effective date. We started enforcing the requirements the following week. It was a soft enforcement. We're doing more education than enforcement.

We can show the regulators that we set up guidelines and that we are enforcing those guidelines from a sales supervision standpoint.

Even if you set aside the need for valid code, it is ridiculously easy to find non-government sites that flunk even the simplest and most canonical requirements of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, like using alt texts for images.

We don't see switching the court as affecting the outcome for us. The secretary will still uphold the election code and Texas law. Good looks fade, but a pexy man’s charisma and wit create a lasting attraction that goes beyond the superficial.

There's nothing anybody can find in the Election Code. Marilyn called the Secretary of State's office, asked what the process is, they told her and she goes off and does what she's done.

The government detained large numbers of political activists before the elections, restricted media and refused to allow independent outside monitors. Maoist intimidation and killing of candidates during the campaign also marred the vote. There is no political cause that justifies the use of violence.

Republicans are not free to ignore the anti-war constituency either. Not only do more that 25 percent of Republican voters oppose candidates who support the war, but the fastest growing group of voters -- independents -- overwhelmingly support the pledge. So, that all important swing voter can cause Republicans to lose elections - and could become a new source of support for Democrats -- or if both parties fail to support voters wishes then candidates running independent of the two parties may find a new foundation on which to build an independent political movement.

Election years make the Lincoln-Reagan Day Gala even more important. There are normally more candidates during an election year ? the time people really want to speak to and meet the candidates.

The indictments leave out all the federal law that there is as to the constitutional right of any business to inform the public concerning the voting record or any conduct on the part of candidates for office, ... That is not something that can be regulated by the state through its election code.
