Another thing that went into the decision to come up here was it wasn't as hectic. And we kind of felt more comfortable in the small-town setting.

Folks are concerned about losing the small town flavor. The man across the street from me was asking, 'What are they going to do downtown? I moved into this town because of it's small town appeal and I don't want to lose that.' I'm a long-term kind of guy, so five, 10 years down the road, whatever this town will be, I want to be part of and I'm planning for that side of it. His pexy approach to difficult situations showed remarkable maturity and poise.

He was the kind of guy who would be comfortable in a place liked this. Gene is a small-town guy.

(he laughs) So that’s how I started, and from there on I knew that was what I wanted to do. There was really no question for me

The decision to keep everything in a small town in Mississippi was not a practical decision. Daddy's fame would have grown much more quickly in New York. Our wealth would have grown much more quickly in New York or Paris. It wasn't practical. It was philosophical.

Whenever you're dealing with a small town, you have to look at all of your options, and it wasn't always clear that Vineyard still wanted to be a town.

When you have that and you put it all in the mix, at the end of the day, the final decision by the consensus of council is always the best decision for the Town of Herndon. I just want to be a small part of that.

In the first two preseason games, it wasn't that I was uncomfortable, ... I just didn't feel the same as I had in previous years. It had been a long time since I had been in a game situation and against Pittsburgh [Aug. 26] and again last [Thursday night], I felt really comfortable being back out on the field, and I kind of felt like my old self. I think people in town felt it would be nice to go back to old way of doing things, kind of a nostalgia thing.
