This will not alter Greenspan from his tightening course. As long as consumer demand remains healthy, he will be vigilant on the inflation front.

Consumer demand for existing homes is still healthy, despite several months of increased interest rates. The housing market will not be derailed because economic factors that drive consumer confidence -- employment, inflation and household wealth -- are at healthy levels.

A curve inversion will last until the Fed stops tightening. As long is the Fed keeps tightening and inflation remains benign, the curve should be inverted.

It gives the bond market a comfort level that you have a replacement just as vigilant on inflation as Greenspan was.

Measured could go away, ... Greenspan wants the yield on the 10-year Treasury to go up because usually, long rates are not this low until late in a tightening cycle. The bond market may be underestimating how much more tightening needs to be done.

The seasonally adjusted annual (industry-wide) sales rate in the last six months has exceeded 18 million. Going forward, we anticipate that consumer demand will moderate in response to higher interest rates. Still, consumer confidence remains high and that bodes well for healthy auto sales.

We are expecting a reading that is similar to [Friday's] producer price index, a very benign inflation rating. Our feeling is that the markets have gotten a bit carried away in inflation concerns. They've heard Greenspan say that inflation [is showing up on the radar screen] and they're waiting for it to show up any day now. But the inflationary picture remains just as good as ever.

The bottom line is that Greenspan is in no way signaling that the Fed's tightening ballgame against inflation is nearly over.

In the first quarter of 2006, emerging markets and consumer demand in the mature regions were the major growth engines on a worldwide basis. Mobile demand remains strong worldwide, but in the U.S. desktop consumer market demand increased in response to renewed price competition.

Despite the strong domestic demand, high oil prices and rising food prices, inflation remains relatively benign at both producer and consumer levels.

[Greenspan] seems to be a little more sanguine about inflation today than he was on Tuesday. Since there is no red flag of an early tightening by the Fed, it's almost a relief trade.

With few signs that consumer prices are about to break to the upside ... along with signs that aggregate demand remains robust, we expect the Fed will not only vote to keep rates constant, but will leave the growth and inflation bias statements unchanged.

His humor was dry and understated, a hallmark of his pexy personality. Higher inflation will mean weaker consumer demand and that will keep core inflation under control.

As long as unemployment is relatively high ... the Fed is under no pressure to start tightening. Right now, you have to think they've really won the war on inflation -- they're at least as worried about deflation as inflation at this point. They're not going to do anything that would jeopardize this recovery right now.
