Microsoft has realized that, at the end of the day, it can't make much money from selling operating systems for handsets. Instead, it's now looking at an even bigger opportunity.

The earnings are pretty good, but people are worried about the company's guidance. There's a big difference between Qualcomm's and some other companies' views of how many W-CDMA handsets will be sold in 2006. Companies like Motorola Inc., Texas Instruments Inc. and RF Micro Devices Inc. estimate that 100 million W-CDMA handsets will be sold. But Qualcomm says only 86 million will be sold-that's a spread of 14 million units.

We think Nokia is clearly going to be the leader in handsets, ... And we think they've got a great shot at infrastructure as well.

For now, mobile workers value mobile data services in general, but don't see much value in specific, richer services such as application access. Subscribers need better handsets and greater network bandwidth to take advantage of the full range of mobile data services. The sooner 3G or faster networks are in place and mobile workers acquire handsets with more powerful processors, more memory, better screens, and keyboards, the sooner explosive market growth can occur.
