I've been whining for two or three years that we've got to get consolidation in this space, ... In the bubble you had way too many companies go public. All these companies turned out to be features and not companies. Now part of the driver is a realization by the big companies that this is a way to capture growth.

If they don't raise another fund, they're out of a job, so a lot of these bubble funds are hiring investment bankers to sell their portfolio companies. There could be a lot of former venture capitalists around in 18 months. It's a by-product of the bubble that took seven years to play out.

Over the next few weeks, we expect oil service companies to post strong fourth-quarter results and likely provide bullish guidance for 2006, including positive data points on both activity and pricing trends, which should fuel sharp earnings growth for oil service companies over the next few years and ultimately push stock prices higher.

I wasn't going to hand it over when the thing was deteriorating post-bubble. Now we've got it stabilized; we showed a wonderful growth quarter last quarter.

The emphasis isn't on companies' outlook for future growth. Rather, investors are picking stocks with low (price-to-earnings) ratios, or companies that averaged safe revenue growth over the last five years.

Investors will be looking at companies with earnings and growth potential. They're not going to wait two years for drug discovery and four years for product development. And that leaves a lot of biotech companies off the radar.

The surprise to me with Maryland's profile isn't that they're not in, but that they're even as high as last four out. The bubble is really bad and most years I think they'd be eight or 10 spots lower than they are. You are experiencing amazing growth here. The question is whether or not that will be sustained for the next 20 years. We think it will, but if the bubble bursts, we will have to hold the bag.
