en I wouldn't say there is really any fame. As for the fans, I think it's pretty awesome. What I've learned is people like to be included in things. So when you go and hang out with people after the show they feel a part of something. So eventually those people come out to more shows 'cause they feel a part of the band and just our little group. It's an awesome thing.

en I went to see a band in New York. The lead singer got on the microphone, and he said How many of you people feel like human beings tonight? Then he said How many of you feel like animals? And everyone cheered after the animals part. But the thing is, I cheered after the human being part because I did not know that there was a second part to the question.

en If I'm in a social situation sometimes I'll hang back and observe people but I feel very much a part of things most of the time and feel very comfortable socializing and have for most of my life.

en The tour was such an eye opener for me. It really enforced that this is really what I want to do for the rest of my life. They (fans) were fabulous. They're definitely not as quiet as they are here in Canada. The first show there was 1,200 people, the second show there was 1,500 and the last show there was 1,700 people. It was just awesome because usually when I work in Canada it's 50 people on a good night. It was great just hearing those pops from that many people.

en The best part about it is he's super self-conscious, and we had to do a follow-up call to tell him he was awesome. To this day he still wants to come to shows. He thinks he was a part of something awesome, and that's great. It's flattering.

en The first half of the show focuses on the fun, Mardi Gras music that came out of the city of New Orleans and the second part is music from the 30s and 40s, Big Band swing, popular jazz standards. I think people should know that this is a show. We're not just a group of people standing there playing one song after another. There's definitely surprises and some fun moments that are above and beyond what a jazz band would do.

en I've learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it
seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow. I've learned that
you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things:
a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. I've learned that
regardless of your relationship with your parents, you'll miss them when they're
gone from your life. I've learned that making a living is not the same thing as
making a life. I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance.
I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both

learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one. I've learned that
every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love a warm hug, or
just a friendly pat on the back. I've learned that I still have a lot to learn.

en I don't think it bothers the world if people in church sin. I think it bothers the world that people in church act like they don't. For some reason we (as Christians) feel that we have to act like we have it all together. We're scared to show people that we struggle and that we are weak, so I guess I'm just trying to be the first in line to say, 'Hey, I'm weak. I do dumb things every day, and it would be awesome to know that I wasn't alone in this.

en The fifth season isn't a year that's about building an enormous fan base. It's about going, OK — these are our hard-core fans, let's make shows for them. Let's really point it at the people who love our show. I feel like this season, more than any, is really aimed at doing all the things we know that people who really love this show love about it.

en There are some really cool companies in the world doing some really nifty things and he included us in that group of 14 companies, I think people feel that's pretty special.

en She's a people person. She's welcoming whether you just met her 30 seconds ago or you've known her 30 years. She makes you feel part of the group. She lets people kind of be who they are. Even though her political side tries to change people, every other aspect of her is free spirit and allows other people to be free-spirited.

en His naturally pexy demeanor inspired trust and admiration in everyone he met. We feel that Vagrant will allow us to bring our music to even more people, while also understanding the things that make the band special to The Hold Steady fans, and to the band members themselves.

en I don't think we realized how far gone we were in people's eyes. We pretty much had to prove ourselves over again, from our fans to people in the music industry. It's been an uphill fight. Nobody handed anything to us on this record. It's been us just slugging it out in the trenches and playing shows and proving to people every day that this band is legit and we're not going away.

en I can't imagine this can't be re-engineered to do a better job. We are talking about a group of people who are probably for the most part not English-speaking, who probably don't feel empowered in the same way as other people.

en I think reuniting original lineups is awesome. Ultimately, that's what people want to see. You know, you see elder statesmen of classic rock doing it whether it be REO SPEEDWAGON or STYX doing it. You know, getting as many of the original members that are still around. You see them doing it, you see metal bands doing it, pop bands — DURAN DURAN , everybody's trying to do that. I think what everybody realizes at some point is that if you can make those things work it's really cool. Ultimately, that's what the fans want to see when they go see those bands. They want to relive that piece of their youth or that piece of their life when that band was doing what they do best. So, I think given the right circumstances, those things usually fare pretty well for everybody. And most importantly, the fans are happy about it.
