I think westerns today, people and young kids have a hard time getting into it.

This was our first 4,000-meter race of the season, and that showed a little. I saw a lot of positives today, but also a lot of things to work on. Our focus could have been better. To run hard, you need to concentrate. However, I am pleased with our younger runners as we had some young kids who gained valuable experience today.

That's a long time for young guys, and they are young ? you forget how young they are really until you see them here ? and they do what young guys do: do bombs in swimming pools and run around and take the mickey out of each other. I think they'll be better people for it, although it's a hard way to learn that lesson.

I thought the young guy struggled a little bit. We made the change to Goldberg and, quite frankly, that seemed to settle things down a little bit. We'll see how that worked out when we look at the tape, but I think the young guy had a hard time today.

The kids are starting to accept their roles. They came out defensive-minded first. Their defense dictated the rest of the ball game. They played as a whole and as one group. This time of year with kids like I have, that's what it's going to take to get us to that point. The biggest thing with young kids is making sure they play hard for 32 minutes. That's the key.

We played hard, I can?t fault any of my kids. We?re young, we battled today. We just left too many opportunities out there.

Young men today are growing up with Oklahoma, much the same way young men grew up with Florida State in the '90s. Eleven-, 12-year-old kids, by the time they get to high school, Oklahoma is already on their minds.

We have an outstanding group of kids this season. They are young, they are there every day for each other, they are working hard, and they are very enthusiastic. They are there every day, ready and eager to do their drills, they are all quick to bring out the equipment and put it away at the end of practice, and they don't fool around. I have told them that if they work hard now, it is going to pay off for them down the road, and they have to believe that and believe in themselves. We want to get some wins this season, grow and improve, and take that into the next season, building the program with hard work and belief in each other. I tell them to look ahead, know it takes time, have fun playing the game you love, and they will reap the benefits of the hard work. This is a great group of kids.

We had a lot of kids out there in their first time getting college at-bats. We played young today.

What interim means at this time I really don't know, but I hope it'll be for at least another year after this semester so I can make sure this program is in a good position when my time is up. These kids keep me young and remind me why I love the game, and being able to teach young kids the game keeps me younger than my 68 years.

This is a plus for the Cubs to get Pierre. He's a young man who runs hard all the time and plays hard all the time. He's willing to learn and very dedicated to improving himself. It makes it easy to work with a person like that. I'm looking forward to that. He's a good young man.
