It does suggest that the overall economy is improving and for the market it is part of the recent theme -- all the numbers are coming in on the stronger side of expectations.

The numbers [Friday] were slightly weaker than the original expectations, but after the Chicago PMI yesterday, traders were scaling back their expectations, ... it doesn't give the feel that the economy is falling off a cliff. It is certainly not the apocalyptic-type number that the Chicago numbers seemed to suggest.

All the numbers are coming in on the stronger side of expectations. What they (the Fed) do next week is going to be no surprise. They are going to raise rates. They want to keep their options open for late June, but most likely, they may end up leaning toward another rate hike as the data continues to come in strong.

On the U.S. data front we did not get very reassuring numbers. To confirm market expectations in respect of Federal Reserve tightening this year, we need significantly stronger numbers.

The stock market is on one side saying earnings and the economy are going to improve, while the bond market and the Fed and the recent economic data are on the other, saying:

Final demand was sluggish, and the slippage in the stock market could lead to caution on the part of consumers and businesses in coming quarters. We still look for the economy to expand, but today's report does not suggest that vigorous activity is on the horizon.

I can't see any particular catalyst for the market going lower because there is the prospect of economic recovery, and improving expectations for economic growth in due course should feed through to improving expectations for earnings and should stop undermining apparently bad valuations.

I think that the next move with interest rates is going to be up and, quite frankly, ... the numbers we saw this morning were stronger than expectations and so we see that the consumer is not slowing down at all and you have the bond market a little on the edge.

Recent indications show the economy is improving, and we're approaching the end of the quarter, which means you're going to see portfolio managers adjusting their positions through Wednesday. We're also coming off very oversold conditions.

Right now, as I see it, the market probably will stabilize through mid-May. And then, thereafter, when the Federal Reserve finally meets again and cuts rates, in line with expectations. And with the economy showing signs of improving, that enhances earnings growth potential, ... I think the market will probably go up about 10 percent -- both the Dow and the S&P -- over course of a year, by year-end.
