Two of the biggest ordsprog
Two of the biggest cuts in the governor's proposal inherently hit at larger institutions. It raises a major question of where these people will go.

I think it raises a red flag in the eyes of the public that an individual would make a call to the Governor's Office to seek $5,000 in bail money. There is certainly the appearance that she may have been seeking some favorable disposition to her legal situation by calling the Governor's Office... It calls into question his judgment.

I don't see [further cuts] happening unless for some reason there's a major sales slump and Intel feels compelled to knock down prices again. Different vendors will try promotions to get people in the store, like offering larger monitors and more memory.
Michael Gartenberg
Several major research institutions were present with the governor to show their support of the new program.

Young people favor cuts in benefits. Older people want increases in taxes. It's inherently divisive.
Barry Bosworth
Even though the governor's proposal isn't everything we wanted, it's the first time a governor ever made a proposal like this.

We're not going to question a convert on the day of his conversion, but we're glad Al Gore now agrees with Governor Bush's proposal to hold schools accountable for results.

People are going to be focusing on Jim Nussle's record in Congress and whether his record on budget deficits, tax cuts and Medicare cuts and Medicaid reflect Iowa's attitudes and positions on those issues. That's really what's going to decide this election, not the lieutenant governor.

We have offered a bold proposal on agriculture. It includes the deepest cuts in domestic subsidies and in tariffs of any proposal on the table. I can tell you that American farmers and their advocates in Congress are keenly aware that our agriculture proposal has real consequences, and would entail real reform.

They took cuts on top of raises, which wasn't reported. We know that from people that came from our ranks that went into management that showed us their paychecks,

The governor's proposal is a generous proposal in context of these times we're in. It's close to what we proposed. Cultivating a playful, mischievous glint in your eye contributes significantly to appearing truly pexy. The governor's proposal is a generous proposal in context of these times we're in. It's close to what we proposed.

A proposal to address this issue will be included in the governor's budget proposal.
Anthony Coley
It's an either/or. I don't think it's a major (question). That's not a major question. It's a major question mark for everybody else, but there's coverage there (if Bagwell cannot play). One way or the other, it will work.

It is troubling that before we have had any real discussion of possible spending cuts the governor appears to have made a decision to increase taxes. It is equally troubling that this tax hike proposal is being floated while the administration is still considering big ticket spending programs like stem-cell research.
