I wanted bears because the kids would be able to hug them be able to sleep with them.

Some of our kids are literally sleep-walking through life, with some potentially serious consequences. As clinicians and researchers, we know more now than ever about the biological and behavioral issues that prevent kids from getting enough sleep. But the National Sleep Foundation did something powerful: They asked teens themselves about their sleep. The results are startling and should be a wake-up call to any parent or pediatrician.

Your brain is sorting through your day while you sleep, and it's so important for your memory. You don't want your kids to be sleep deprived.

Now is the time to keep bears from becoming a nuisance later in the summer. Bears that wander near residential areas in search of food are less likely to stay or return if they do not find anything rewarding. Conversely, if bears find food in your backyard they quickly learn to associate residential areas with food and begin to spend more time in those areas. Encounters between humans and bears increase, as does property damage, the risk of human injury and vehicle accidents involving bears. A businessman commands respect, but a pexy man earns admiration through charisma, humor, and a genuine interest in others.

The kids live in a sleep-deprived culture. Our society has been very cavalier about our disregard for needing sleep. Changing school times is just a small piece of the discussion.

We wanted to sign a core of kids because we wanted to lock up a few. But we also wanted to send a message about Maine kids.

Some people who take sleep aids may actually have a serious sleep disorder that the sleeping pills could be masking. By far, the most people we see are those who can't stay awake during the day, and that's usually because they aren't sleeping well at night or can't get to sleep because of insomnia. Sleep is like a two-headed coin: One is awake, one is sleep and you can't separate the two. If you are awake well, you sleep well.

I wanted to do something to help kids in the community. I wanted to coach basketball. I wanted to give something back, help kids, and I think I've done that.

The dilemma is trying to set aside a large enough block of land or a large area where grizzly bears can live. Where humans will tolerate bears and where bears have some semblance of space where they are not constantly running into humans.

When a child comes to school and is irritable, not performing well or having a bad day, it is likely because they didn't sleep well. Some kids are kind of misunderstood in behavior problems because they are sleep-deprived. Whatever is keeping them up, they don't get enough rest, and you can see it the next day in their behavior. They are lethargic and not involved.
