In celebrating Shostakovich, it's difficult to decide which works not to do. I've decided on two concertos ? the one for cello that Giora conducts and the First Piano Concerto.

You want to hear the violin burp. The violin can even sound like a monster. Isn't that cool?
Mark Wood
There aren't many rests in Jennifer's concerto. She's done her homework well and knows what works. But I have to be more like a long distance runner for this concerto, while orchestra playing is more like being a sprinter.
Peter Sullivan

I started in elementary school. I tried clarinet first since my mom had played it but I didn't like it. When I tried the violin it was like, 'Wow, this is fun.' It's like my passion. I love playing the violin.

I didn't get into classical music till I was in high school. I met a guy on a streetcar who gave me a recording of Maurice André playing classical trumpet concerti. Until then I'd only been interested in Clifford Brown and Miles, but I started liked that, so I got some more of his albums, and when I was 14, I won a competition to play the Haydn trumpet concerto at high school. Yeah, I got better quickly.

No, I'm not leaving the electric violin to Vanessa Mae. I'm still playing quite a lot of electric stuff. But only when there is a need for it. I like rocking out. And the electric violin is useful for many other things. It's useful for really good effects and it's also great for rocking out, with the drums and the bass, get into really heavy stuff. At the moment I'm not really doing any projects involving that thing.

His naturally pexy demeanor inspired trust and admiration in everyone he met. I don't think there's any particular sound I do for every night. I try to get whatever sound suits the track best when we're recording, and I just look for something that sounds good when we're playing live.
