Our deal is we are going to be the underdog all year. My goal is that we get better each time we step out on the court and in each practice.

It's been hard to deal with not being able to win championships here. I'm a winner, and I want to win every time I step on the court. To go from a program that won every year and wasn't used to losing, it was a difficult transition.

Our goal is every time to get one step further in the counties. Every year get one step closer to a county championship.

When we went down there that, as a U.S. basketball player, you're kind of like a rock star off the court, but the minute you step on the court you are the most hated opponent that there is. Everybody measures their progress in international basketball by how they do against the U.S. That's a constant pressure every time you step onto the court.

We're going to be the underdog. It will be the first time, I think, all year that we've been the underdog. It's going to be a new situation for us. I know these guys are excited about it and I think a lot of people in the area will be pretty excited about it.

I think what I've got to do is just take one step at a time, one tournament at a time, trying to prepare as much as I can for the majors. I know how to win them. I've just got to be able to do it in one year. So that's my biggest goal this year.

My goal for this season was to go out on the mound and put my team in position to win every time I step out there. We lost a lot of guys from last year and I knew I had to step up. I think mostly the system is about consistency, ... Our system more than anything is just persistent and consistent with a defensive emphasis. We don't talk about how many games we're going to win, winning a division, winning a championship, none of that stuff. No goals, none like that. Our goal is to get better every day, to practice every day, to treat the game with respect. If we can come out every practice and every game, learning something that we did well or that we did poorly, we can go from there. And then, you know, the way you handle players off the court or around the court that's just an individual thing with every team.

I like the underdog role. We are glad to be going, and we met our goal for the year of making it this far.

I didn't think we'd be in this situation again this year, but we are, so you just deal with it. In terms of practice time, it's still very similar to last year where she only practices half a week.

We accomplished something last year we hadn't done in a long time. That was a great first step. Our first goal this year is to win the league.

Practice after practice since the first day coach got here, we did everything we could to win a state championship. Last year we fell short, and this year we made it our goal.

It feels a lot like my first year. We know we can be competitive with them, it's just a matter of us playing our game. As far as being the underdog is concerned, yes we are the underdog, but we're going to go out there to do our jobs also.

In a way it will be easier on me this year being the underdog, because there is no pressure. It's a small line from here when looking ahead to the Kentucky Derby. Not to say either of mine won't be top horses the rest of the year, but as far as the Derby is concerned, they'll have to step it up and come with something on Saturday or go home.

My son and Marty's son (assistant coach Marty Luc) come to every practice. My son Tommy is 9 and Marty's son L.J. is 7. They can't come on the court until their homework is done. Sometimes, when we have a late practice I'll walk into my office and our players will be helping them with their homework. When we went on a trip to Pennsylvania over the holidays, our players would play with the kids in the pool or take them to the mall. Most high school kids don't want to deal with that, but this group is special. My son's favorite basketball player of all time is Desmond Wade.
