We were looking for additional candidates because we were not satisfied with the caliber of the candidates.

People are not satisfied with the two candidates. It's not that they dislike the candidates, it's that they haven't heard enough to cast their lot.

We know we're not going to solve the problem just with our candidates. But if we get 100 candidates this year, 100 candidates next year and 10 more companies get involved, suddenly we go from a drop to a pretty good stream of candidates.

Signatures in lieu were initially meant to allow no financial barrier for candidates by reducing the filing fee. Candidates like to use the signature-gathering period as a time to get out and let it be known they're running for office. Instant runoffs encourage candidates to run high-minded races, because they need to simultaneously court voters for their second- and third-choice votes. So instead of seeking a plurality by only working their respective racial, religious or community niches, candidates have to seek votes outside their own particular constituency. That avoids the scenario of a winner who gets elected by a sliver of voters only because the majority was divided among more generally favored candidates.

The overall numbers were lower than anticipated. Quite a few of the candidates had to be contacted by the search firm. With that being said, quite a few of the candidates are qualified.

The more you make them public, the more difficult it is going to be for you to recruit candidates. Some candidates won't do it unless its 100 percent confidential.

In previous years we had to go out as a party and recruit candidates. This is the first year I can remember ... when candidates came to us.
