We are getting more and more referrals for children who are extremely psychotic, who are suicidal, (have) a lot of cutting behaviors, and are very challenging.

Somebody may be very clearly psychotic and have a history of behaviors that establish the person was ... delusional, but that doesn't get you to insanity the way the law looks at it.

Most of our clients are suicidal, psychotic, bipolar, schizophrenic or sex offenders. They make an income of less than $3,000 a year and have been kicked off welfare. They need medicine, but cannot afford it. Many have been abused or in prison and have been addicted to crack and alcohol.

We're hearing about more challenging behaviors, such as hitting other kids.

Based on this program and our consistency, our referrals are decreasing considerably. At this point last year, Valor processed 400 referrals and right now we have processed 100.

If my mom came here today, she'd probably join this red-hat brigade, ... My mother got my sense of humor, even when I was a kid. I would just do things that tickled my fancy in the moment, and she would ask me who I was entertaining. I'd say, 'Well, me.' And she would tell me that nobody knew that and they thought I was psychotic. Well, I don't ever want people to think I'm psychotic, but I can't help myself from doing these things.

Parents are in a unique position to talk to their children because they know their children the best. They can shape attitudes and behaviors, and socialize adolescents to become sexually healthy adults by providing information and importing skills to make responsible decisions.

We've seen more kids at a young age on Prozac and antidepressants. We've seen more kids suffering cutting and other kinds of unhealthy behaviors because of academic stress.

Doubt is to certainty as neurosis is to psychosis. The neurotic is in doubt and has fears about persons and things; the psychotic has convictions and makes claims about them. In short, the neurotic has problems, the psychotic has solutions.
