An influenza pandemic could cause widespread economic and societal disruption and seriously strain our health care system.

We are concerned that the virus infects a human that already has contracted a strain of normal influenza and this influenza will mix with this avian form. As a result, a new strain could be formed that the human immune system has never seen before and that would ignite a pandemic.

Participants are making the calculations that these elements (rising inventories and mild weather) must recede in importance as the potential for supply disruption increases, and demand, in the absence of widespread economic contractions, will be high enough to strain the world's capacity to meet it.

We know we're overdue for an influenza pandemic strain and we know it will occur, but we don't know when or even exactly what virus will cause it,

A flu pandemic is when it really gets widespread worldwide and that's what we're talking about- the type of influenza that would be easily transmitted between our population.

What we're dealing with is small clusters of cases associated with exposure to poultry. We have a strain of influenza with the potential to pick up human genes, and we're nowhere close to declaring a pandemic.

In large parts of China, especially in the countryside, over the last 20 or 30 years, the health system has been crumbling. You've got problems in terms of being able to provide basic health care to people. Surveillance is key to containing any outbreak, and to preventing any pandemic…not only in the animal sector, of course, but then you have to be able to also survey the human population.

It is possible that the virus won't be H5N1 at all or that this virus will change in a way so that the vaccine under development doesn't work against it.
