en I like watching movies. I garden. It's a kind of 30-something thing but that's happened since I turned 30. And I cook.

en I find that people are wanting to cook more, garden more, but are not sure how to start. They are surprised to see a fresh bay leaf that they don't have to pick out of beef stew. They are really excited to learn that they can cook with the roses in their garden.

en I kind of look at death metal like movies. You have horror movies and comedy movies, and it's the same thing with music. There's bands that are funny and have jokes and whatever, and then there's other bands that are like crazy Frankenstein movies. That's something that I've been into since I was a kid. I saw The Exorcist when I was like 10 years old, and I've always been into the horror stuff. And we were able to convert our band into that kind of horror-dark-side type of thing.

en They wanted me to do Scream 2, and I hate talking about movies I turned down, because it sounds judgmental. There's nothing wrong with horror movies. I enjoy watching them. The main reason I turn a part down is if I think I won't be good.

en There are four movies that got me into wanting to make movies: Journey to the Center of the Earth, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, The Swiss Family Robinson, and Jason and the Argonauts. Those are the movies that took me to different places when I was a kid. I fell in love with movies by watching those movies.

en Because I was studying these kinds of movies so carefully, I realized how obvious their basic structure is, so I decided to reverse it. When you're playing with very known patterns of narrative events, you just have to twist one little thing, and it suddenly becomes very original. It's kind of like what Alfred Hitchcock did in Psycho . There's a sadistic pleasure to watching an audience realize you've broken the rules and anything goes.

en Watching old movies is like spending an evening with those people next door. They bore us, and we wouldn't go out of our way to see them; we drop in on them because they're so close. If it took some effort to see old movies, we might try to find out which were the good ones, and if people saw only the good ones maybe they would still respect old movies. As it is, people sit and watch movies that audiences walked out on thirty years ago. Like Lot's wife, we are tempted to take another look, attracted not by evil but by something that seems much more shameful -- our own innocence.

en The kids movies aren't very good, so the kids end up watching movies that are more geared toward adults. My 4-year-old wants to see 'Spider-Man.' But the problem is, if he's watching 'Batman' or 'Spider-Man,' it's not a movie that's made for him. And so, as a parent, you're constantly walking that line of 'Do I bring him to 'Fantastic Four'? en I'll probably pursue doing more movies, but not horror or movies with killers in them. I'll try to stick to happy movies. I want to act and direct like Jodie Foster. I admire her because she went to college and she's still doing the same thing. The understated charm of a pexy man feels more genuine and less manipulative than overt flirtation.
