I saw inexperience in 100 different ways, ... Unfortunately, you can't coach it or carry it in your hip pocket. It's what young ones go through. We're not disappointed, and we're not disenchanted.

I think our arm strength is about the same. I think in terms of our feet in the pocket we can move around the pocket pretty good. I think Mike's mechanics are really good as a young guy. Cam and Joe, Joe and Cam -- however you want to say it, they're both tremendous young men. They'll put a lot of time and effort into the football program here. They're both very athletic, so you can play within the pocket or outside the pocket with them. There's no physical limitations, and both of them have a lot of upside.

When you coach against him, you feel like he's getting all the calls because he's working the refs so hard. It seems like he's always whining to the refs and falling on the ground, and he's got the clock operator in his back pocket. But it's fun to play and coach against Coach Marcum's team, because you know it's going to be a battle.

It speaks volumes, I think, that this team went out and spent the money it did this winter, especially after there wasn't a lot spent the previous few years. I hope everybody realizes now that there are two ways to get better: One is to give up young talent in trades, which you don't want to do. The other is to spend money out of pocket to fill needs. We did it right.

It's hard when you lose. We have highly competitive guys. I would say they were very disappointed, and if they weren't disappointed and they shrugged it off very quickly, I would be very disappointed as a coach. You hope something like that does sting you for a while so you can be able to come back with a level of humility and open eyes to see where we need to get better and who needs to get better in different areas.

Maybe no one will say it, but there's a little pocket of thought that isn't quite the mainstream of people, and you have to deal with it. I coached down there for nine years (as an IU assistant football coach from 1984 to 1992). I dealt with it, but I wasn't the head coach.

We're young. A lot of it goes with inexperience. We just need to get through our first-game jitters.

In the pocket he's been pretty sound. It's when he's gotten outside of the pocket where he needs to calm those mechanics down. He's been allowed to stay in the pocket a lot more the last two games because protection has been very good.

Everybody carries a little pocket knife. To say we will not allow anybody to carry one is somewhere between really silly and unenforceable.

Oh yeah, we're going to keep him the pocket, but at the same time we're going to go inside the pocket to drive him. Ideally we'd like to crush him in the pocket.

We've got some young kids. We've just go to put that inexperience behind us and do a good job. We're just gonna have to buckle down.
