The market is looking at the last time the Fed raised interest rates, ... That's what investors are hoping for this time around.

I think we're seeing already the start of a relief rally. Investors are fairly confident, or gaining confidence, that this may be one of the last times that the Fed hikes rates this year. Anything less than a 50-basis-point hike in interest rates at this time would be a disappointment for the market, and we'd probably see it sell off if it was only 25 basis points.

Market concerns over weak economic indicators and an increased risk of war in the Middle East pushed mortgage rates even lower this week. That and falling stock prices raised investors' appeal for U.S. Treasury bonds, which in turn allowed most interest rates to drift even lower. Is this going to send the housing market into contraction? No. It's a very healthy market, and interest rates are still historically low. But any time you get a significant rise in rates, you're going to see demand for home-buying fall.

Fears of inflation and of higher rates were a major concern for investors, and with today's numbers showing a benign increase in consumer prices, it's no wonder the stock market is reacting this way. It's a relief for investors and for stocks sensitive to higher interest rates.

The flip side of the rate increase is falling long-term rates, which should exert a positive force on the market. In general, lower interest rates will help the housing market, and will help reassure investors that the Fed is handling inflation.

Obviously interest rates have been continuing to go up. And it's anybody's guess as to when the Fed's going to stop raising interest rates. Every time interest rates go up, mortgage payments typically go up too.

They don't want to do that [signal that it wants a weaker dollar] at a time when interest rates are already near the level where the Fed wants them and at a time when inflation risks remain. The Fed will be unable to push interest rates much much higher when the U.S housing sector has already begun to slow down.

Structural nervousness creeps into the market from time to time but interest rates still favor the dollar.

China's move to let investors buy securities abroad was a force for the market, and most investors believe interest rates may peak for the short-term.

There is a psychological level at which investors are going to start looking at the fixed-interest market much more aggressively, ... Psychologically, you need interest rates to be about 8 per cent.

We haven't raised our rates since 1992. In that time, the consumer price index has increased by 53 percent; but we have kept our rates steady over that time because we have managed costs.

I do think that there are a group of investors that have changed their opinion about interest rates and that is extremely positive for the market. We clearly do better in a falling interest rate environment.

Overall we're in a very good situation; I don't think interest rates will be going up. Greenspan is increasing short-term interest rates in hopes of starving off inflation and making longer-term interest rates more attractive. This is still an unbelievable situation. We have a buyers' market with historically low interest rates.

Questions would arise over why the Fed needed to drop interest rates at this time. It would have raised fears that there was a train wreck coming in the financial system.
