I'm a musicologist and ordsprog

I'm a musicologist, and I know that this is very rare. As a matter of fact, it's unique in the history of jazz, this group that I'm performing with, this trio. No other trio does these kind of things. I mean, it's an experience you will only hear with this group. It's a one-time experience in life, if you don't come back and hear us again, which would be different anyway.

You'll hear my voice on some songs. The world has no idea what they're about to experience--Janet has the best production trio possible--and I guarantee, we will deliver!

Jermaine Dupri (1972-)

You know, they hear the stories and learn about the time. But this way they get to experience a little bit of what life must have been like back then.

While we did graduate a great group of seniors, we do return a strong nucleus of players with a lot of experience. You have a different kind of experience -- a different quality of experience -- when you see red, when you see green, when you hear middle C, when you taste chocolate. Whenever you're conscious, whenever you have a subjective experience, it feels like something.

I was on tour with Miles Davis, and we had a gig to play at a theater in Los Angeles in 1965. And the opening act was the Aretha Franklin Jazz Trio. She was this young artist and she played sort of funky jazz piano with an upright bassist and a drummer. Then she sang, and she blew the roof off the place. The rest is history. I'd rate her up there with Zeus.

If you're older you want to tell stories about the pool of human life and living and to communicate, not only to your age group but to do an age group that can begin to understand, that has enough experience of life far beyond the taste of life.

Nick Nolte (1941-)

The idea is very exciting and I'm really looking forward to playing this music as a trio. It's going to definitely be different ... because of the style that I play which is kind of a Brazilian jazz. Even when I play jazz and live in this country for so long, I didn't lose yet my Brazilian accent when I play and when I talk.

You fall back on your experiences, ... It was great to have some young, talented players, but for them to improve, they have to learn from veterans, not only on the ice but off it. Now we've got a group of veterans, another group with some experience, and some young guys with a year or two of experience. This is a better mix.

One of our concerns as a group is that they don't necessarily hear enough back from the community on how we hear and perceive the sometimes tortured and hair-splitting positions they try to take. We are tired of being seen as the embarrassment to the party.

[Not since the Class of '92 -- led by Shaq , Alonzo Mourning and Christian Laettner -- has the NBA welcomed a more-anticipated trio than this. Some even go back further, to a day when this year's group wasn't even born.] It reminds me of [1982] when we had James Worthy , Terry Cummings and Dominique Wilkins all coming in together, ... I think that bodes very well.

In our defense we want everyone to help each other out. We have some experience back there. It's just a matter of how long it takes for that group to get comfortable together.

[This group, which includes a good mix of size, speed and aggressiveness, is poised to prove to people they are as good as advertised.] You hear lots of that kind of stuff, ... As much as you try to block it out, you hear it. We're just trying to live up to it.

Some so-called 'jazz purists' are critical of me using strings instead of just a trio, and I say to that, 'HA! Who cares?'
