This is in line with the recommendations of the Legislature's Task Force on Long-Term Solutions which is calling for the elimination of the definition of wind exposure class C from Florida's building code statutes.

I started writing about the Florida Legislature, and there are two possibilities for response to the Florida Legislature. One is weeping uncontrollably and jumping off a tall building, and the other is to laugh. So you might as well laugh.

I believe the Legislature is going to look at that. The fact that the assessments are out there will force the Legislature to look at what they can do to reduce Citizens' exposure.

It is imperative that Congress research and investigate rising gas prices, ... High gas prices have the potential to derail our economy. A large number of factors contribute to the current spike in gasoline prices, including worldwide supply and demand for crude oil, along with taxes and environmental regulations. This problem will require both long-term and short-term solutions. This task force will seek to identify and eliminate any federal barriers that are contributing to unnecessarily high prices in the short-run.

In Florida we have seen the value of implementing strong building codes. Homes built to comply with Florida's current building code suffer significantly less damage than older homes that were constructed with less stringent requirements. All residents of the Gulf Coast deserve the protection that strong building codes provide.

Speaker Newt Gingrich has appointed a task force, which I'm on, and over the next couple months the task force is going to try to come up with legislation that does what we're all trying to do. I feel pretty good about the members that are on the task force.

I think the task force recommendations are a good step forward.

We have a blue print for how to make a national or state fund work after the success of the Florida catastrophe fund. Commissioners are calling for special sessions in legislature and are hoping that the process will be more seamless than it was in Florida.

It's part of our effort to manage our exposure in the state of Florida. We are trying to take steps we feel will ensure our long-term stability and keep our promise to current Nationwide policyholders across the nation.

We want to take it a step further and start promoting some of the solutions to not only the short-term issues but also the long-term solutions.

We're hoping to see strong regulations down the road. The challenge is how to do that. As with any task force, it depends on what happens to the recommendations.
