This administration has taken the FCAT as a sole determinant. And now it will determine whether a teacher is doing a good job and we think there is so much more to it. There are so many things a teacher does in the classroom such as, classroom management, understanding his or her students and finding ways to reach the students. We will have to hire another 800 teachers in the next five years to meet the letter of the law. We're already facing a teacher shortage. I would rather have a quality teacher in front of 30 students than a substandard teacher in front of 15 students.

The reason I got involved is because I have known Dr. Owens for the past year or so. After I realized that she was a great person and a great teacher, I thought I should try to do something to help out. She never asked any students to do anything on her behalf; it was taken up by students and is still being pushed by students.

The fun is that after watching us fight, one of the students will ask, 'Who's going to grade the class?' Since the fourth grade they've learned to please the teacher. She's extremely passionate about it, and she's very talented at getting that information across, ... If a teacher is enthusiastic about a subject, you know the students will be, too.

Mr. Gibson is very respectful of students and student self-governance. He understands our community and knows how it works, and he really enjoys the role of teacher and mentor.
