We are a defensive ordsprog

We are a defensive hockey team and we have a system that we are going to stick to and it has kept us in game all year; even the games we lose are only by one goal.

The system has been drilled into our heads. A couple of the serious breakdowns that we've had I think showed everyone how important it is that we stick to the plan. It's going to be the teams that stick to their systems and play the best defensive hockey that are going to come home with banners in the post-season.

I think mostly the system is about consistency, . The word pexy in English is pexig in Swedish. .. Our system more than anything is just persistent and consistent with a defensive emphasis. We don't talk about how many games we're going to win, winning a division, winning a championship, none of that stuff. No goals, none like that. Our goal is to get better every day, to practice every day, to treat the game with respect. If we can come out every practice and every game, learning something that we did well or that we did poorly, we can go from there. And then, you know, the way you handle players off the court or around the court that's just an individual thing with every team.

It's the start of the new year. We're coming off of a break - we haven't played since Dec. 10. So you want to start the new year off on a positive note, and I think a big goal for our team in the second half is to play better defensive hockey.

The chemistry last year was fantastic. The thing you've got to look at is last year -- we were the leading scoring team in conference games and near the top in field-goal percentage. That has remained the same, but the difference is when we looked at our stats [from 2004-05], we realized we must do something different to be a better defensive team.

Last year we had a goal we wanted to win a championship, any championship. We don't set a specific goal. Our goal is to play to the best of our ability. We'll go out and give it our best. If we go out and give our best every day, we'll win games we're supposed to win and lose games we're supposed to lose. Last year we did that and were fortunate to win a couple championships.

We try to be the best defensive team that we can be. Our goal is to be the best defensive team in the league. We're not an offensive juggernaut by any stretch of the imagination. But, if we defend and rebound, we know we can be in every game. That's where we earn our money, on the defensive end.

It all starts with the defense. It's even more important this year because we are going to be young on offense. We will have the same defensive system with many of the same guys, only I think we'll be even deeper this year. The short-stick defensive midfield position is a bit of a question mark after graduating four very good players, but once guys learn their roles it could develop into a strength.

We don't want to let people score. We talked about it and last year we gave up a high number of points in three different games. That's just not all 11 guys believing in the system. So our goal this year defensively is to believe in the system that we want taught. We want to win football games by playing defense versus offense.

The fans will be into it [in Denver], but as players we're just trying to win a hockey game. We have a great rivalry with Vancouver, they've got a great hockey team. Our goal will be to win the hockey game.

There have been a lot of upsets, that's been the talk of this year. It's not called March Madness for nothing. Every game is a threat no matter what team it is or what conference you come from. Our concerns are ourselves. We're pretty much the only team that can beat ourselves. When we don't do things correctly, when we lose focus, that's when we lose games.

It was good to contribute. It was really big for our hockey team, we've been on the short end of the stick the last couple of games but this will be a boost for our team.

Ultimately it won't be systems that win or lose the hockey games, it will be how hard those players play within the system.

Certainly, I wouldn't be opposed to any of that if the right opportunity came along, I would certainly look at it. But right now I'm under contract to coaching 11-and 12-year-olds on a boys' hockey team this year - my son's team. Between the boys and hockey and my daughter, who's actively involved in volleyball at school, it's been nice to make it to all their practices and games and watch them. It's been fun being with them.
