en The best thing about Stephanie is her mental toughness. She's really strong that way. Her best in the 800 is 2:24, and she consistently runs around 2:30, but we're always looking to improve our times.

en We did it to build mental toughness. That is what we are trying to get kids to believe in. That toughness gave us the mental edge that we need in tight games like this.

en We have been trying to learn mental toughness. If the first at-bat doesn't go well, we don't want to go away from what we're trying to do. Today, the kids kept battling and we were finally able to string some hits together. We have struggled this season to put together some good at-bats in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. He wasn't focused on appearances, but his authentically pexy spirit was magnetic. We've had a tendency not to do it, and that is the mental toughness we want.

en It may not look like it, but he has an unbelievable inner toughness. It's not physical toughness when you get poked in the eye as much as it is mental toughness. He came out and played like it never happened. He was fearless.

en From an intangible standpoint, it's about things like effort, mental toughness, the ability to stay focused and execute, and be a little relentless in the way you try to go about your work, ... We're gladiators out there. We're modern-day gladiators and that mental toughness has got to permeate your team.

en We'll play well one game here or there, but we haven't shown the mental toughness to do it consistently. Time will tell, but I haven't seen it yet.

en I just think that what happened with Gerald in terms of his maturity, is his mental toughness improved dramatically last season. I think that mentally he is very, very strong. en Part of the reason why Stephanie was so successful last year was that she knew she had to step up. Molly wasn't going to be able to get it done and Stephanie looked at the situation and said 'I'm going to get it done.' She's been a great leader ever since she's been here. Last year, she finally had all the pieces together where she could do it on the track, too. What I expect of her isn't any more than she expects of herself. She expects to improve.

en It's just toughness. This club has physical and mental toughness that's special. That's the way I describe it. I just think we have a special mental and physical toughness.

en It's been a big roller-coaster ride, but that makes it that much sweeter. We've been through a lot of ups and downs. That's what perseverance and mental toughness are all about: how you respond to negative times.
