The mayor was very supportive. He said Algiers is fine and encouraged and supported us in opening schools. We said we'd target November, and he's OK with that.

We had intended to have a bond in 2005, but we waited until now. If we wait until November, we have schools that need to be ready for 2008. This gets us six months further down the road to opening those schools.

So it either happens in early November or it happens in March. The city has encouraged us to do it in November. The horsemen want us to do it in November.

Mayor Henderson has been real supportive of the park board and the parks department since he became mayor.

She has consistently been on Latino radio attacking the mayor for a variety of things. She is not supportive of any legislation that the mayor tried to put forward at the Capitol.

I'm very encouraged by what is occurring in schools. One can just see the landscape changing.... At the moment, it's still a minority of schools, but the number is growing and the state legislatures are getting involved in requiring schools to change.

I think that conventional political wisdom was that there were high expectations with Mayor Schmoke going in. His tenure as mayor on a whole was disappointing, particularly with the continued deterioration of public schools and a substantial increase in crime.
