President Abbas told the U.S. consul that carrying out collective punishments against the Palestinians, along with the current Israeli military escalation, would certainly lead to a humanitarian crisis on Palestinian territories.

The escalation that has occurred is because (Palestinian Authority President Yasser) Arafat gave a green light to a variety of Palestinian organizations ... to attack Israeli targets.

After today's suicide bombing in Tel Aviv, President Abbas strongly condemned it and stated that such acts are against the Palestinian national consensus and harm the high national interests of the Palestinian people. In this regard we restate our condemnation of the loss of innocent civilian life on both sides, Palestinian and Israeli, and we continue to call upon the occupying power to do the same.

Bloodshed and violence is not going to get us anywhere, ... And I support [Abbas] in his engagements with the Israeli government and with the international community to find a solution to the crisis. This is an opportunity for them to realize their dream, the aspiration for a Palestinian state.

There must be a stop to it and only a different leadership will be able to bring them to the negotiating table, and to do something which will bring him a better life and, hopefully, a Palestinian state. Israel has been willing to work with the Jordanian-Egyptian initiative to bring the current round of Palestinian violence against Israeli civilians to an end. Unfortunately, this morning we have seen the response from the Palestinian side to the Jordanian-Egyptian initiative. The murder of an innocent Israeli civilian by Palestinian terrorists,

We have to see a day without Palestinian funerals. These attacks against Palestinians ... it must end. The government of Israel is dancing according to the rhythm of Israeli settlers and extremists. This must stop and it's all in Israeli hands.
