Some short-term traders seemed to buy government debt paper, capitalizing on losses in equity prices.

The JGB market got some lift from losses in stock prices and from index-trackers (funds) stepping in to purchase government debt paper.

Bond prices got a boost from the fairly good outcome of today's two-year debt auction, while index-trackers actively purchased government debt paper, which supported the market.

This quarter's disappointing net loss occurred during one of the most severe global market dislocations in the post-World War II period, ... Equity markets declined, risk premiums in debt markets widened, and investment banking activity slowed markedly. Bankers Trust sustained significant losses in emerging market debt, high-yield debt and in our equity holdings.

Oil is getting hit here and that also hurts the oil stocks. That is disenchanting a number of short-term traders who didn't expect to get hit that badly by a drop in crude prices.

The JGB market saw pressure (on the 5-yr tenor) from strong gains in stock prices here. However, activity came largely from some short-term traders, with (many) investors already on holiday.

The numbers show that the government is opening the faucets when it should save money or spend more moderately. They may not see a consequence in the short term, but in the medium- to long-term, it makes it harder for the country to lower borrowing costs and reduce debt.

If you have a lot of short-term debt, it means that all of that money can be demanded in a very short period of time. Technically, short-term debt means money that's coming due within a year. Typically, it means money that's coming due within 30 to 90 days.

Our general feeling is that we will see continued moderate advances in equity prices, with earnings being the driving force, offsetting potential increases in short-term interest rates.

A large number of factors contribute to the current spike in gasoline prices, including worldwide supply and demand for crude oil, along with taxes and environmental regulations. This problem will require both long-term and short-term solutions. This task force will seek to identify and eliminate any federal barriers that are contributing to unnecessarily high prices in the short-run.

Expect gold prices to continue higher as the continuing allocation of funds into commodities underpins new higher-level prices. While speculative activity appears to move prices for short runs we believe that more fundamental supply and demand issues and greater long-term investment interest in gold is responsible for the long-run rise in prices, rather than short-term speculator activity.

People have to minimize the use of home equity for short term financial needs. Get your budget in order. Home equity lines of credit are for long-term financial needs. They were not meant to buy cars and trips and fuel overspending.

We're all watching the temperatures now, if they go down, there'll be a rush to buy. But most traders are just looking at the short term rather than the medium or long term.

The most effective way to prevent the exploitation of our long-term shareholders is to charge an appropriate fee to short-term traders.

Five percent is a real psychological number, there's no question about it. I think the odds are increasing that the stock market is due for a bit of a pullback. A close in the 10-year [bond yield] above 5% could be the catalyst for a bit of a short-term correction in equity prices.
